Apologies for resurrecting a dead thread.

But in response to not being able to get a lacey look with knitting. *ahem* There are many many many lace patterns for knitting. If you need a starting point try "Oldenburg Lace Shawls".

Crochet simply gives you a different kind of lacey look.

And if you really want lace, bobbin lace making is properly Victorian / DIY.
