I'm no military strategist, but I've always heard that the Golan Heights were key to Israel's defence.

Good move on Bush's part?

News confirmed by...

Jewish Telegraph
Ha'Aretz
and Israel Today.

all sighting a Kuwaiti newspaper.

Either Bush really wants single digit approval ratings... Leave Obama with an even bigger cleanup to do in regards to foreign powers... or Kuwait got their info wrong.

Cause really, what if Lebanon takes the Golan Heights but reconnects with Iran? Does this mean we have yet another global conflict to deal with in an already war weary society.

Strategically and Politically it's a bad idea, and no smart person would do something like it. But that hasn't stopped Bush before.

'Land for peace' never seems to work. Look what happened to Gaza.

*sigh* I sometimes wonder what other alternatives there are.

Quote:
The significance of the Golan Heights to the security and welfare of Israel is outlined below:

*
The topography of the Golan serves as a natural blockade against any military attack from Syria. The Golan is essentially one high-altitude plateau that overlooks southern Syria and serves as an excellent vantage point for Israel to keep track of Syrian military movements. [3]
o
Advances in ballistic technology in recent years have increased the importance of keeping control of this strategic high ground and maintaining geographic depth. [4]
o
During the 1973 Yom Kippur War, control of the eastern mountain ridge of the Golan helped 177 Israeli tanks to repel 1,400 Syrian tanks. [5]
*
The Sea of Galilee borders the southwestern Golan and provides one-third of Israel's fresh water supply. In 1964, the Syrians attempted to impair Israeli access to fresh water through a damming project, which the Israel Defense Forces ultimately thwarted. [6]
*
Israel has utilized the fertility of the Golan landscape to enrich and expand Israel's agricultural sector.
o
About 40 percent of Israeli beef, 30 percent of Israeli fruit and 38 percent of Israeli wine exports come from the Golan. [7]

Without the Golan Heights, we're in deep trouble. neutral

I usually like Bush but does he even have the power to do that?

That's what I thought at first. "The Golan is not Bush's to give."

It seems ridiculous. You can drive from one end of Israel to the other in a matter of hours, yet it's Israel that has to surrender land. Syria is a big country that doesn't need the Golan as much as Israel. It was part of the "drive the Jews into the sea" coalition of 1967 so screw 'em. Israel doesn't need to please them. I dare Syria to try something. Do they want Damascus within shelling distance once more?

Leverage my friends, leverage.

The US has a lot of significant relations with Israel, politically and militarily. It is theoretically possible that the State Department can tell Israel to back out of the Golan Heights and Israel will do it.

What kind of bargaining chip does the US have? Well, half of our Air Force is going to become 5th Gen aircraft (see F-35, F-22 & other new developments) we're gonna have a LOT of obsolete aircraft and there's 5th Gen heavy bombers due out in the next 10 years. Imagine, Israel with B-52 Bombers, F-15Es Air Superiority Interceptors (they only have the C model right now which they refer to as the I series) A-10 Tank Killers and F-117 Stealth Attack Planes.

The Strategic importance of the Golan Heights becomes nullified if Israel can drop 70,000 pounds of high explosives from a single aircraft on the area the size of your average professional football stadium, unopposed.

... Why is Bush offering up part of Israel to the very kind of countries that he's so keen to fight against? I'm sorry, but really? Deal with your own country right now.

Is this secret letter officially confirmed and everything? This whole concept just blows me away.

As far as I'm aware, the Golan Heights have been on the table for quite some time.

I'm not too worried. Israel has something that counters the loss of the strategic land, and it's probably some new batch of tech from the States.

Here's what I read. Not that President Bush was offering anything at all, but that Israel is considering a previously attempted plan with the Saudi's/Arab world. I'm all for it personally, but some say my opinion isn't as weighty because I'm not a real Jew and I don't have the same connections to Israel as others. *Shrug* I still thinking talking is better than noses turned upward...even though that's bound to happen here soon.

Perhaps a dozen C-RAM R2-D2 units will sweeten the deal

Or a wing of bombers that can hit Pakistan from Tel Aviv.

Rolling Thunder? anyone?
