I don't really know who to come to and I hope you guys aren't offended by this, but I really need help, I just learned that my friend was raped yesterday and I think she needs to sleep but she wont because she is afraid she will dream about being raped do you guys know a way to stop dreaming?

Have a large dinner before bed and sleep with the lights on? :/ Anything to make her sleep lightly so she doesn't really reach REM sleep.

Lavender tea should help keep her calm. Because of the chemical components, and the fancy, calm sounding name. Don't tell her that last part.

I suggest the tea. That is, after talking to police, registering a report, and telling the few loved ones she can.

I agree with all of the above, especially with Joshua's "Report it" suggestion.

I'd like to add two things though:

1. Have a TV on while shes sleeping, this can do two things, either keep her from sleeping deep enough for dreams or induce dreams based on whats happening on the TV (at least thats how it works for me). Put a happy movie on and have her sleep.

2. Get me his name if at all possible (assuming the possibility that your friend knows the piece of trash).

Personally, I'd recommend counseling. sweatdrop

There are rape centers that give free-to-cheap counseling sessions. They specialize in rape trauma and how to overcome it--technically, getting persistent dreams like that and/or being gun-shy with the subject or memory triggers is a sign of post-traumatic stress disorder. The best proven way to deal with that is counseling, regardless of what the trauma was.

Short-term, I'd say drugs. They KO you relatively fast and usually prevent REM sleep. The two main problems with sleep aids are 1) they are highly addictive, and 2) they DO prevent REM sleep, which is essential to healthy brain function. Go without it, and you can't think or concentrate too easily. Go too long, you die of nervous system failure. No joke. But VERY short term... drugs. *shrug* Worked on me, for a day.

Honestly, if she's terrified of sleeping, chances are once she finally conks out she won't remember any of her dreams. Also, it is important to remember that dreams are rarely literal. My son convinced intruders to leave our house, and anytime the memories bother him he has a nightmare about talking to Smeagol (someone he knows is sneaky and duplicitous and means harm). So...she might just have a nightmare about being swarmed by spiders or similar. I don't suppose that's very comforting, but it's how the brain shields you as you process traumatic events.

And yeah. Counseling.
