I agree with Ash as far as the goth metal thing. Not the HIM comparrison, though.
I think it depends on what the person is into currently.

I don't try to convert people, but I'll help someone if I can.

As for getting someone into it, I'd generally say that the more mainstream bands are the best to start with.

I t really all depends on what that person likes in music. My friend is a huge fan of Depeche Mode. And now, what she likes there is a) vocals, b) that it generally is somewhat melodic. Though, she likes to listen to some metal songs. A few of Manowar, Maiden, Metallica songs. But what she can never accept is what for example happens in Metallica's One. She likes it until James stops singing - basically the instrumental part after it is too metal and too less melodic for her liking.

Though generally, looking at what she likes to listen to besides Depeche Mode, you could think she can be converted. DM is itself very rocky, then she likes Rammstein, HIM, some Faith No More, Linkin Park and stuff like that. But everytime you want to put on something more away and more extreme than that - she says no.

Maybe she's just too old to get converted wink

Oh... and the song should not be longer than 5 minutes. If it's longer, it gets boring wink .

I got one of my friends into gothic and symphonic metal by way of Apocalyptica. Within Temptation and Nightwish are hardlty kvlt, yes, but it's moving in the right direction.

The most accessible metal genres are gothic and thrash, I think.
I thought Heavy and Power were...

*strokes chin* If we're going by pure popular appeal, no, they aren't. Metallica and Megadeth are extremely easy to get into, especially if you've been exposed to classic rock. Gothic is usually melodic and simple, traits that are good for mass appeal. Just look at the popularity of HIM (I know they're goth ROCk, but the difference between goth rock and metal is often very narrow).
But Iron Maiden and Dragonforce are nearly just as popular(maybe not so much Dragonforce because they are a new).

There is a huge difference between Goth Rock and Gothic Metal, and HIM are not Goth Rock. Goth Rock is stuff like: Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. HIM are just a rock band who use a little bit of Goth Rock influences and a little bit of Metal.

I tend to think metalcore is the most accessible, but that's only if you already have a nu-metal/alternative audience.
Most Metalcore isn't Metal though.

True, but it's a transition point. I started out listening to metalcore before I dove into metal fully, and my convertees have generally done the same.

The first band I really got into was Converge (not a metal band), but thanks to them I got into Entombed around the same time I got into Mastodon and Saint Vitus.

A lot of Doom is within normal song length, especially the more Heavy metal-ish ones, which are the first ones she should hear anyway (only a couple of exceptions really).

really? most of the purest doom bands (like candlemass and saint vitus) have really long tracks, that's why I said that.

True, but Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Witchfinder General, Cirith Ungol, The Obsessed, Trouble, etc; still have for the most part normal length songs and are among what should be listened to first in Doom.

Trad Doom is not the only version of doom bestowed upon man (though my better half would insist other wise wink ), Death doom or Goth doom arent' too horribly long. Rainshadow or The Etheral, FTW.

Nice music. I'm not sure if she's going to like this kind of guitar and vocals, but I'll see what can be done about it wink .
