Hi, I just joined. I'm an avid pet lover, with experience with mammals (dogs & "small fuzzys"), birds, herps, but limited experience at fish keeping. I had a 10 gallon fresh water tropical community tank, and goldfish (in bowls redface ) as a child.

More recently I have gotten interested in the fish hobby and have started to try and learn to do it correctly. I have 3 tanks running right now. 2 established tanks....my 75gal. houses my turtle who does have a few rosey reds, a couple of ghost shrimp and 2 plecos as "tankmates" and a 10 gallon goldfish tank. The goldfish tank is home to 1 fancy goldfish and one apple snail. I am thinking of upgrading to a 55 gallon and adding a Black Moor. I wonder if there are aquatic plants that will stand up to goldfish and snails?

My other tank is a 20 gal. that I recently set up to keep guppies. I planted it (my first attempt at a planted tank)with Peacock Fern and White Ribbon. The reason I chose these plants was simply that those where what the petstore had that looked healthy. I let the tank sit and the filter run for about a week before I added any fish. Then I added my first pair of guppies! Then in a WEEK the female had babies! She was gravid when I got her and I didn't know it. So the tank wasn't even cycled correctly and had fry all over the tank. eek

Anyway, now the fry are about a week old and growing, doing surprisingly well. the parents didn't seem to be eating them. Maybe they picked off a few weaklings but I didn't see them do it. Yesterday I had about a dozen fry still in the tank. Last night I did a water change but was very careful not to syphon out the fry and checked the buckets before dumping them. I did another water test this morning.....my Ammonia is now back to 0ppm down from .5ppm! Nitrates and nitrites are up though, even after a water change. I guess this means my tank is cycling...nitrate was at a "safe level" according to my test kit, but nitrite was at "caution" so I assume my tank is at the second stage of the begining cycle now. This moring though I could only count about 7 or 8 fry! I'm not sure if the nitrite spike killed a few off, or if just messing with the tank to clean it stressed the parents out just enough to make them turn on the fry? But I didn't see any tiny corpses.

OH! And I think My female guppy is gravid again!!!

Hello and welcome to the hobby, and guild XD

My mom always hated small fuzzies, unless it was a cat, so that's why it's always been fish for me since I was a kid.
Well, lets start. What do you mean with a 'turtle that has rosey reds'?
You have the shrimp with the turtle? I'm not sure if this will work for the shrimp, since turtles are omnivorus, it might come to see them as a snack, well the red cheek turtle would anyway. I only had that species for a short while, but they are quite enthousiastic eaters, if not over enthousiastic. I've olso heard that some turtles may n** and scratch at fish, so even if plecos are armored fish, caution might be advised.
Then again, I don't know much about turtles exept that the one I had looked cute, produced a lot of waste, and rearanged the rocks in the aquarium so often it finally broke the glass. Never mind that it loved swimming into the glass too XD

Not sure if aquatic plants can survive apple snails, but there are plants that can survive golds. The 2nd post on this page gives a whole list of plants that can be kept with golds: http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=9105897&page=2. I did live in the tropics back then, so some plants may not do so well in colder klimates, so I suggest just experiment. Also, the more plants you have, the less chance you have of them being killed by eaten.
Since you have multiple aquariums you can also try swiching the plants around to give them some downtime. When one of my plants looked particulary sad I would take it out and put it in my guppy breeding tank. Toss in a few drops of plant grow stuff and they will liven up quickly. Often in time to swich with the next victem of goldfish molestation.
If you feed your goldfish lots of greens they are also less likely to munch on plants. Here's a thing I was working on concerning fish'snacks';http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=11741473
Since both golds and apple snails are large waste producers make sure you have a goodfilter there. It's a great idea to get your fish a companion though, golds are very sociable.

Ah guppies, they get pregnant so easilly, but in my experience it's a headache to get the young to reach adulthood. Unless you have more then one tank so you can keep the parents and the young separate. I also heard that aquariums that are densly planted have great survival chances, but since I don't like playing hide and seek with my fish all that much I never had more then 1/3 of the tank planted. I never had much success with getting the majority of a guppy's drop to adulthood. Goldfish and Angelfish worked better for me.
I've never been quite into guppies, but other people in the guild are. Here's some threads concerning guppies:

Hope I could help a bit with the info load, and I hope more people will pop in to help you along. I've got no idea how active this guild is now a days. I just came back today after a few months absense. But I warn you, It's often quite slow XD

Hi! Thanks for the reply!
I guess I wasn't too clear about my turtle tank in my first post ! I would like to clarify that when I said "tankmates" I put in parenthesisbecause I meant it somewhat jokingly. The rosey reds and shrimp were intended to be lunch. Pickle (the red ear slider) has, in her benevolence, allowed a few to live. it's actually kind of a funny story, because I know atleast one of the Rosie Red minnows is from the original few fish she was ever given, because it has a birth mark. It's as if she really did become friends with that one fish and leaves that one alone! I think the ghost shrimp are just good at hiding. I didn't even relize how many I actually still had in there until I did a major tank cleaning. Pickle pays no attention what so ever to the plecos.

And thank you for all the other info. I am going to look at the links about plants for goldfish and what not. I want to upgrade the goldfish tank and use the the 10 gallon as the growout tank for the guppies. I think I am going to take my time figuring out exactly what I want to do with it though. The next in line for a major upgrade is actually the Whites Tree Frogs...but I guess thats a different forum!!! Unless anyone here has experience with water/ land mix terrariums...I want to get a good sized tank and section off a little pond and add a waterfall/filter, and do the rest land, since they are tree frogs!

Hmm, this isn't the first time I've heard of feeders not getting eaten. I don't really get it, but oh well, enjoy it while it lasts? Or maybe your turtle is becoming vegetarian?
I like ghost shrimps, but I can never keep them alive in a community tank. I once even saw my school of neons gang up on them and kill one. They din't eat it really, just toyed with it, violently. So much for the peaceful lable.

How are the other tanks doing? Any luck yet with the plants and are the babies doing good?
I don't realy have any experience with amphibians, 've only once kept an Iguanna, I released it when it got too large.
And before you start a rant about releasing pets into the wild, I don't really think it'll count if I caught it in the wild to begin with XD
Have you ever kept (water) salamanders btw? I'm kinda interested in them, I love their colors, but I know next to nothing about housing.

well the other tanks are doing...ok. But, my female guppy died! I dunno why. I found her under the log...but other than THAT they are good. I still have some fry in that tank, and the male seems healthy. The tank finally cycled! I added 3 panda cories today. So far so good! My goldfish is doing well too, but I still want to upgrade the tank.

I actually did keep newts before, what kind of salamanders were you thinking of getting? The one bit of advise I can give you right off is you NEED a lid for the tank. They do climb.

Awww, to bad of the female. I had that happen before with new fish. They eighter survive the first 2 months to live years, or not sad
Not sure what the cause of death is, too much stress from all the traveling?
Oh it's been a long time since I've had corries, but they are so cute! I had to stop keeping them because I swiched over to a much taller aquarium and the distance to the surface was too much on them. From all bottomfeeders I prefer the red tailed black shark, (Epalzeorhynchus bicolor), so very pretty.

Hmm, I haven't given much thought to the salamanders yet, they just have to be a small species, since I just have a small slice of table for them. About 10 gallons if I push it, but probably less :s
I'm thinking I might just have to wait a while untill I maybe get a roomier 'house', or I figure out another place to put an aquarium.
