"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. ''Be very still,'' he whispered, as if I wasn''t already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat."
As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.
Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward''s sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer''s writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction.(Ages 12 and up)

I do adore the book but the character development over all 4 books was rather bleak. Bella was annoying and well, simply one of the stupidest main characters I have ever encountered in my journey through literature. And, sadly enough, I like Edward's attitude vastly better when he hated Bella, he reminded me about of that cunning little tyke Artemis Fowl. After he decided to let Bella in his personality disappears and he's just "lovelovelove". The only characters that had a good basis for development and a story were not main characters and thrown to the sidelines.

I agree with A Vespertine Romance. The Book's were good, I did enjoy them all but the charcter deveolpment was rather weak and Bella was far too annoying to really get to like and that is NOT because she got to be with Edward. She just seemed to think that the world had to always revolve around her, and liked to moan about almost anything she could think on...I donno she just bugged me >.<
My fav charcter was actually Alice who I found more enjoyable than most of the main charcters.

I liked the first book the best. The second book was interesting. The third book was funny with the competition. The fourth book was surprising, but was kind of annoying. I can't wait for the next book. I love the fact that she is giving the other point of view. I find that very fascinating. I also cannot wait for the movie! I hope it is like the book.

I've never read the book, but I've gotten mixed reviews. Some people like the book, but most people I talk to don't like it. They say it's poor writing and a horrible plot line. It's been compared to an airplane novel, even. I've also seen blurbs on the internet, and they seem ridiculous to me. They're too easy and redundant. Ah hell. They're cheesy. And I like more literate books. Also, the plot sounds like a boring teen angst romance novel. I hate angsty romance novels. I hate romance novels in general. Call me a critic, but every book review needs a stick in the a** review.

The reason that there are so many different comments about the book... is probably because the book is targeted at a specific group of readers (by age, gender, etc.) so the targeted readers do love it, while other groups find it not the least enjoyable. I myself agree with A Vespertine Romance, that the character development is weak... And the way she portrays the characters is... Well I don't like it in the least bit.

I unlike most people had to wait for the books to come out, all of them I read them all, knew that they were going to make a movie out of the book then prayed to GOD that they weren't going to make a movie. They made it and totally effed it up, I haven't seen it and the only way that I'm going to see it is I'm going to call my friend, we're going to go buy it and then we're going to make fun of it!!!!!!!And now due to all of the little tween girls running around going, Oh edward!!!, oh Jacob!!!!, eff both of them, I hate everything about those books now all due to the movie.......

I own and have read all of the Twilight books. I enjoyed the story line and unlike most people I know, I read the books before they became popular. Like i said, I think the books are good and i think the movie was okay. i understand why certain changes and scenes varied from the book, which for some reason pisses a lot of people off. (Come on, if they would've kept everything in the book the movie would've been longer than Titanic or Seabiscut).
The only thing that really annoys me now, even though I still enjoy reading the books is wherever I go there is always some crazed fan screaming about Edward, screaming about Jacob, screaming about Jasper, Emmet, James, Carlisle and every other character in the books.
Aside from that overall rating on a scale of 1 to 10, one being the lowest, ten being the highest, i give the books (entire series) a solid 7.5.

I was a fan BEFORE they were popular as well. I kinda get annoyed with the popularity it gets nowadays. I even got the last book on opening night >___> I was obsessed. But the fourth book deflated my fandom. Jacob Black was the reason I kept reading I'd rate the books.....a 7 heart

I liked the first book, didn't mind the second too much, but absolutely despised the third. Perhaps because I'd just read Rosemary's Baby and I'm going: KILL THE BABY, DAMNIT. IT'S THE FRIGGIN' ANTICHRIST! Or because the author got me all hot and heavy about the almost-sex scene, but cuts it off to the next day, where Bella's all beaten up and whatnot. So you're going: AH MAN, I JUST TOTALLY MISSED A HAWT BONDAGE SCENE?! Oh, wait, not bondage? BUT, IT'S VAMPIRES. I WANT MY KINKY, BED-SMASHING SEX SCENES.
I'm a strange 'ittle fanatic, that I am. :]
I won't ever admit that I like the series as much as I do, though, offline because I usually get mobbed by frighteningly hysterical (I mean, I squealed like a dying rabbit when Starfire and Robin kissed...if you can get worse than me then that's pretty bad! Of course, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about so nvm that.), or even more frighteningly hateful bookworms and pompous literature critics.
I mean, I realize Stephanie Mayer isn't the best writer you could ever find, and there are more talented writers who deserve her ridiculous revenue, but Jesus, I don't need: GAAH WORST BRAINWASHING BOOK EVER WRITTEN IN HISTORY shoved down my throat. I like forbidden romantic books about all that star-crossed lover stuff, a'ight? I don't even like the whole flawless vampire idea to begin with. It's just an addictive page-turner that made my heart flutter and my girlish teenage hormones kick into hyperdrive.
I would also like to mention that I'm not going to be making out with an Edward poster anytime soon.

in the beginning when Twilight came out, it did not impress me. i looked at it and out of boredom started to read it. the first book was good but then the books just got worse and worse. the characters did not change and Bella started to annoy me and Edward got boring. the story was very predictable and the ending was not surprising. the only twist was that Jacob imprinted with Bella's daughter. and even that wasn't that eek soo yeah i just got tired of it
