What would be the best pedal for a funk player?

I'd really like to play funk. Would I even need a pedal? Also I have a passive bass, are there any pedals with built in pre-amps?

*just got started doesn't know much about pedals and such*

Envelope Filters and Wahs

More specifically, Electro-Harmonix Bass Balls (envelope filter) and Bass Crybaby (wah).

Well, Digitech has a multieffect pedal for basses, and all effects have amp-models in them. I know it has this one sound that makes the bass sound "funky". If that doesn't work, try slap bass.

I've just started out, so my slapping is kinda lame. I can do it on the open E string D; thats about it for now, lol.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll start looking into them, and I'll probably get one at a later date when I can actully play with my buddies.

And they sound way too digital. You may as well be playing a keyboard through one.

Thats kinda what I liked about it, that it completle changed the sound of the bass. I'll give the Dunlop Crybaby wah a go, next time Im in the shop. For now though I think Im at least a year or two away from my first pedal.

for me, i have a Boss MetalZone pedal and a Flanger, i was looking at Behringer distortion pedals, i mean for $30/40 AU you cant really go too rong, they look pretty clean designed and hopefully they would play well too.

I have both a vintage Maestro wah-wah pedal (probably 20 years old), and a seriously vintage Sam Ash Fuzzz Boxx distortion pedal (40+ years old).

The Fuzzz Boxx is my pride and joy. I'm in LOVE with the Rickenbacker-ish "distortion". Now if I could only afford the real thing... sweatdrop

I say "distortion" because it was made before they really had a term for distortion. At the time (Beatles-era, if anything) most people would label it as "electronic noise". Whatever you want to call it, it makes me melt. smile

By the way, lovecore, I'm in love with Muse.
