My base art, Kenpo, works with the staff, baton, nunchaku, and the sai. My own explorations with weapons include the Karambit, a curved knife common in Indonesia and to practitioners of Silat; a great variety of European blades, from the Espada Longa to the Sgian Dubh. I love the Sgian Dubh, as well as the Gladius Hispanensa, but the Dacian Falx pulls a close third. I have also worked with a blackthorne walking stick/ shilleghle, in a traditional Irish method, good fun. Yawara/Kubatons are also a good tool to know how to use.

Ooh, Ooh, how about a Sarong, or Hanawari rope....

I think that empty hands are one thing, but I like to stack the deck. I carry no few knives, a walking stick, Yawara, and length of knotted paracord. I am a tool using human.

Your weapons sound the most unusual but that is mainly because i have not heard of most of them lol. Personally, I think a common pencil would be enough for me. Especially with a good point. cheese_whine

compass is better. i went to an all girls school and compasses were the ultimate weapon, beating pencils hand down

Now that you mention it they did ban metal compasses at my high school. hmm. Those things are sharp. and draw circles around the competition.

I use nunchaku some times with my capoeira. Just for fun because I like the weapon. I also use brass knuckles as well. Again, because I like the weapon.

In high school I used to carry a pad lock with a chain attached as a self defense weapon. just like all soft or sectional weapons i could use it like chucks or like a whip. very effective.

I shall elucidate, the Espada Longa is what Maestro De Liberi called the Long sword, or arming sword. ~48" in length, held with two hands. The Sgian Dubh is a traditional Scottish knife, roughly translated it means "Black knife" Perhaps hidden in the folds of a Kilt, or other place. It is commonly seen now worn tucked into the top of the stocking on the right leg. Here is just such a knife:

The Gladius Hispanensis, was a straighter roman short sword. The wasp waisted ones are a little unweildy for my tastes. great for hacking and thrusting, not so great for fencing. here is an archeological photo:

And the Dacian Falx was a rival weapon of the Rome, the edge is on the inside of the curve, great for sundering shields or splitting armored soldiers....

One last photo, this of a group of Shillelagh. An Irish club from the root of the Blackthorn tree/bush.

And yes, the pen/pencil can be as mighty as the sword is stuck in the right places!

Interesting, thanks for that explanation.

I vary in the practiced use of many a weapons considered improvised weaponry, such as a survival shovel, and walking canes. But i also use a variation of a chinese flail that has a loose blade at the end of the strong cord attached to the staff. I'll never pass up using my hands if possible though, i like to do a mix of wing chun and zui quan. biggrin

I'm proficient enough with almost all weapon types, but my favorites would have to be:
Bo staff, 9 piece chain, sword (1/2 handed), tonfa, Kunai, and a good sturdy pen (beats a pencil any day of the week for dessert).

And while I'm here, does anybody know where I could find some information on a style called "Cloth Spear"? I'll provide what I know if you need more info. xp

That sounds like a nice weapon. Have to teach my kids that one when I get some.

My Sifu and fellow student and I made up "Skate-Fu", because my friend (the student) and I would skateboard everywhere, so we asked him to help us use the skateboard as a defensive weapon if ever need be. It was awesome and fun =)
And as for other ones, we studied using an Asian parasol, the Tessen (even though it's primarily a Japanese style), and the Bandit Sword (I'm not sure of the actual name, but it's the weapon that's half-blade-half-hilt, used to cut the legs of horses during war). Anyway, those were the most fun weapons we learned in my classes!
