Do any others of you find this offensive and setereotypical? Barlow Girl - Never AloneSad thing, that was one of my favorite songs emo I have really liked their music for the past three years, and was really let down when seeing that video on Steel Roots. The lack of thought and the false message about people of the gothic fashion in the video bothers me, even if there are alot of people of our sort who are not Christian... there are just as many in the ratio I've found, if not more, "normal" people who are just the same. I have already written a letter and plan on mailing two copies of it to Steel Roots and any P.O. Box for Barlow Girl's fan mail if they have one. It simply is rather nice, and uses scripture from the Bible saying not to judge some one by their appearence, and included a poem called Black Sheep along with it... oh, and suggested they check out christiangoth.com if they ever got the chance.

I can see why you are offended. I am a little too.
But it looks like BG was trying not to be streotypical but ended up doing just that.
The theme: A dark depressed misrable goth girl finds God.
BG'g mistake: Not all goths are all depressed. Often only the wannabes. And yes, alot of us don't know God, but a good chunk of us does.
I can see exactly why you are offended.

Okay, i get it now smile Thanks!
Yeah i see where you guys are coming from. I guess one thing for them is that i would assume is that most of the people who listen to barlow girl aren't really hardcore, death metal, black is my favorite colour kind of people. They seem more like the preachers kids or the good christian girls who might have a punk rock bracelet but still get kinda scared if they saw a true-blue goth :p.
Not saying that good christian girls or preachers kids are bad at all, they are great, but usually i wouldn't take them for the "lets hang out in a graveyard and play freeze tag at 2am" kind of gang. And i guess neither does barlowgirl razz .
If they were going to do that i think though that they perhaps should have made other references to the fact that she's running away from God or whatever, besides the fact that she is goth. Like running out of a church or throwing a bible or something...ya know what i mean?

and actually, as a support and high five to us...
Usually the more abnormal christian that even christian society doesn't think as "noraml" are the ones who have the strongest passion and backbone for Christ. Not like those "I wear whatever i want and go to youth group and mess around with my bf" average kind of christian...sad. :/
I think it's because we believe that we don't have to be like everyone else to be loved by Christ, and those who truly believe it actually don't conform to this world. Rare thing indeed.

I understand, as someone said before, that they were trying to show how a depressed, miserable girl could be loved. and i guess they thought it would be easiest to show this by dressing her goth. but i think it would have been a wiser choice just to dress her normally, maybe in hoodie and jeans. because a lot of 'normal' people are miserable, too.

I think it's very symbolic, actually.
Yes, not all goths are miserable, but the black is very symbolic of a biblical message. Her clothes are all black. At the end of the vid, you see her mascara running off. A symbol of the old self being shed. It's not meant to be offensive, it's meant to open our eyes.
Because despite the fact that she wore black, she was washed pure white in Jesus' blood.
I think it's a little stereo typical that some of you think that someone needs to be depressed and miserable to be turned towards God.

Hmmm.... pretty interesting. thanks for sharing! smile
i think it's just showing a girl in general who needs to be loved, but then again it is unfair to interpret that all people who "wear all black" are away from God.

I can't see the vid due to a copyright claim. But I think I get the picture. It does sound a bit offending, but perhaps we're just misunderstanding Barlow Girl. Not much I can say, but maybe they're meaning to give a different message.
