I can proudly say that I have seen all the anime episodes more than five times at the least and own the entire Manga series that has been released. ^^ So I have to vote for both of them.

Trigun Maximum for the win.
It takes everything that was good about the anime.........
Then goes the other way with it.
Vash, for the better, though still a joker, is by no means a total numnut goof ball like he is in the anime. He's very concerned about his soul and the well being of his brother, even as they fight for the death. In fact, all the characters are better in the manga. Wolfwood is twice the demon, Meryl and Milly are close to being a little hot, and Knives, Legato, and the Gung Ho Guns are SOOOOOO much scarier... And in Knives' case, there is a better reason for being a complete a*****e.
And let's not forget that the manga has Livio, Elendira, Chronica, the black hair effect, the Ark, pieces of Earth, and The Eye of Michael.
Which is not to say that the anime is bad..... It's just........ Old....... And not as good........

The anime is what got me into it but I think for depth wise and for story telling value the manga has to win, even if it does get confusing sometimes.
