The Flashback: How Leslie met Locksmith

"I don't know why you brought me here."

"Shut up and enjoy it, Les. Who knows, maybe you might find a dog you like!"

"I don't like dogs." A small laugh.

"Ooh, Evan, come look at this one!"

"Coming, hon. Les, come on, keep an open mind."

"You're the ones adopting, Ev. I don't have time for a pet." A sheepish grin.

"Sure, sure. No time for a pet, no time for a boyfriend--"

"Evan!"

"Coming, honey!"

"Better move it, Ev. She's snappin' the whip."

A slug to the arm, and laughter. The woman calling Evan had stopped in front of a kennel with a black-red Australian Shepherd. Upon further interogation of the poor man at the Humane Society, they decided to take the dog home. Locksmith sat in the back with Leslie, both scruntinizing each other.

"Isn't he precious?"

"He's big."

A few months later...

"I can't watch him, I have--"

"Leslie, I swear, it's only for a few days!"

"But who's gonna watch him when I'm at work, Ev? Can't you two just put him in a hotel or something?!"

"Leslie, please. We don't get away often, and he's not that much trouble--"

"Often? You two go away every other month! Why can't you take the dog this time?"

"Leslie, our cab's here. Just for a few days, okay?"

"..." A deep sigh. "Fine. Whatever. A few days."

"Thank you, Les." Evan kissed her cheek, and left Locksmith sitting in her hallway. They stared at each other, scruntinizing, and then Leslie sighed.

"Well? You hungry?"

Locksmith followed her into the kitchen.

That night...

Locksmith didn't know why Leslie was holding onto him so tightly on the couch. It wasn't a scary movie on the television that humans seemed so fascinated by, but she was shaking and tears were rolling down her face. On the screen, a news reporter was talking about a plane that'd gone down. Leslie squeezed Locksmith, burying her face into his fur, and mumbled something. His ears picked it up easily, despite the muffling from his fur.

"... Looks like you're staying for a while."

The next morning, Locksmith was left home while Leslie took care of something. A few days later, they were at a funeral, where two big, long boxes were being laid out beside each other. Leslie cried then, too.

The day after the funeral, Leslie adopted Locksmith legally.

In which Dagda becomes part of the family.

Carling felt someone following her, and sped up her pace a little. She never got out, and the few times she did, rarely did Carling wander farther then the corner store near Evan's building. This time, though, she'd wandered farther away then the corner store, all the way down the other street until she got to a store specializing in fish. The owner there had given her a nice little treat, which she was carrying back home.

But someone was following her, and she didn't like it. The gray manx turned into an alley that led behind Evan's building. There was a ladder she could climb up to get back into the flat. Whatever it was was still following her, but before the odd creature could turn, Carling disappeared behind a dumpster to wait.

After a few minutes, she could hear someone talking. Another cat, she decided as she watched from her hiding spot. "Dang. The cat came into her line of vision. It was another manx, though he looked a tad dingier then she did. A stray! "Now where'd she go to." So he was following her. Well, Carling decided that the only way to get him to stop would be to tell him so. Like any civilized feline. Dagda turned around, his small dark-orange tail bobbing to and fro in irritation, and as he did so, a blur of gray leapt out from behind the dumpster and tackled him.

"AH!" He yowled, falling over and clinging to the blur so as to balance himself. Both manxes rolled head-over-tail into a cardboard box that had been laid on its side, the momentum knocking the box right-side up. When both of them regained their senses, Dagda was the first to speak. "What was that for?!" He got up, ears twitching irritably.

Carling rose, and swatted at him, green eyes narrowed. "Why're you following me?" She snapped, the hair on her back raising threateningly. She didn't like it, being stalked like some sort of prey. Dagda sat down, raising one eyebrow at Carling, and snorted laughter. The laughing wasn't what Carling expected, and she deflated with a small huff. "You've been stalking me since that fish shop--"

"Emery's." Dagda corrected, getting up and hopping out of the box. He went over to the dumpster she'd jumped out of, retrieving the wrapped fish and carrying it back to her. "He always gives scraps out." He dropped the wrapped fish.

Carling frowned, and stood up in the box, putting her front paws on the edge to watch him. "... Well." She sniffed, and hopped out of the box. "That doesn't answer my question. Why're you following me?" Carling went over to her fish, picking it up in her mouth and starting to walk to the ladder. The obnoxious orange Manx followed.

"So you're a housecat." Dagda observed, following her up the stairs. "I was wondering why you were riding around in that... thing." He snorted, watching her. "That was your owner?" He tilted his head at her, ears perked up in curiosity.

Carling sighed around the fish, and set it down carefully on a step, turning to face him. "Yes. His name is Evan. He teaches." She picked her fish up and continued on to the fourth floor. Dagda simply followed. Carling hopped from ladder to window, with her orange shadow close behind, until she got to the open window of Evan's flat. She hopped inside, and put the fish on the floor, turning to face Dagda who was perched in the window. "You can go away now."

Dagda came into the house, looking around. "I've never been in a place like this." He frowned, starting to wander around the living room. Carling rolled her eyes. "It's cozy." He looked over at Carling, amused. "When's your owner get in--"

The door opened. Carling and Dagda both looked up, red and green eyes wide, as the human came in. Evan Mousad entered the house carrying bags of groceries, and clicking his tongue. "Carling, I'm home!" Carling winced, and glanced over at Dagda. Quick thinking led to her shoving and nudging Dagda towards the kitchen, where Evan was. Dagda yowled, and tried to get away, but Carling pounced him.

"Will you knock it off!?" She hissed, swatting at his face. Dagda fumed, swatting back. The noise, however, got Evan's attention, and soon the human was walking into the living room. Carling looked up, and bolted off of Dagda, sitting down next to him and meowing. Evan froze when he saw the stray, and blinked slowly.

"... Brought home a friend, Carl?" Carling nodded silently, looking over at Dagda. Dag was frozen, staring up at Evan like he was going to devour him. He came closer, and Dagda started scooting back, too scared to get up. In one smooth motion, Evan scooped him up. "You're awfully light, little guy." Evan mused, scratching the top of Dagda's head. Dag looked at Carling, frowning. What was he doing?!

Carling followed after Evan, as Evan carried Dagda into the kitchen and set him on the counter. "I got catfood for you, Carl. Guess you won't mind sharing with your new friend, huh?" Carling mewed in agreement, hopping onto the counter next to Dagda. While Evan's back was turned, she nudged him.

"Looks like you're stuck here for a while." She smirked a little, nodding to Evan. "He'll take care of you." She promised, hopping off the counter and onto the kitchen table. Dagda stared at Evan and Carling, confusion all over his face. He'd gone from stray to housecat in the span of an hour. Dagda was torn between wanting to leave and wanting to stay. Carling was nice, and Evan, in the few minutes he'd seen him, he was... nicer then a lot of humans he'd seen.

He'd stay. At least, for now. After all, how rude would it be to skip out on a meal? "Alright. I'll stay for a while." Dagda grinned a little, and hopped onto the table, nudging Carling over so he could have some of the food too. What the hell, right?
