My take on magic is usually along the lines of the Forgotten Realms world. I don't really know all the rules of it, but I'm still trying to make it my own.

I love reading about magic and kings and queens and chosen ones (when well written of course). I can never seem to suspend the reality barrier when I try to write these though, so I'll get a fanciable idea and when I'll start to plot it or write it I'll be grossed out. I can't seem to let go and write about magic without getting all heavy in its science or philosophy.

I just want to say that I hate creating magic systems and whichever way I do it, it always comes back to bite me. gonk
Okay, well maybe not hate, exactly. But it can be hard to balance cool magic with some kind of rules and limitations. Take Harry Potter, for instance-- fun books, fun magic, but consistency of the magic is not really there.

The problem is, J.K.Rowling used almost every type of magical ability from flying, reading minds, alchemy, spell casting, turning into animals...etc. So whichever our generation wants to use we may be accused of nicking her ideas, though they are common practise in fantasy.

When I write about magic and science, I usually just make it a sort of heredity-type thing, like blue eyes. Sometimes people can have it, some people can't. So there's that to consider when you wanna be a wizard and such.
Then there's types of magic. It's all pretty vague in my story, really, except for the field of animal charming. xd That's the magic of getting two animals to do it together and have little mutant babies, which results in many creatures that otherwise wouldn't ever happen naturally. One of my more scientific characters actually asks how it's possible for the animal's genes to be compatible together, and the wizard just says it's sort of like using a screwdriver to cheat on a Rubix cube.
Hopefully no scientists call me out on my bullshit. xd

I use a magic system that requires the ability to see the magic flow, the better your sight the better your ability. I plan on having different species access their sight in different ways; one race uses fanaticism to access it, another uses tools, and some use chivalry. I am yet to figure out the limitations.
