I can't really vote on that because it differs based on the situation. Those who suffer from depression and commit suicide; it is definitely not an impulse

It is actually both thought out and spur of the moment. Sad thing is, for those who do so at the spur of the moment, there is no going back. For those who think about it, they either are quietly screaming for help first, or plan is out so well that they cannot be convinced not to.

Suicide is normally caused by depression, and depression - not everyone knows this but - it is a disease of the mind in which the brain is unable to create endorphins (AKA chemicals that cause happiness)
