Can someone please explain the differences and uses of these two particles, please?

Wa emphasizes the subject. Ga emphasizes the subject more than wa. =]
EDIT: though I've been told you have to be careful what you use ga to emphasize, as apparently you can end up coming across as rude. The only example I can think of is:
Watashi wa jinsei ga heta desu. (I am not very good life)
Life is more emphasized as the subject than "I". And I personally can understand why it would be considered rude to use the particles the other way around, because it would be like you were implying you are more important than life.
