Alice went very still for a moment, blinking at We'rika with wide eyes. For a beat it seemed as if he might have lost all function in his shock.
And then he laughed.
It was a loud, almost startling sound that shook his wide shoulders. "Actually," he snickered, "it was my hobby before that. I used to be a PD for the Gambino Island force."

Sevilin's soft smile blanched into a strange mix of curiosity and anxiety as he watched Alice grow still at We`rika's comment. Was he angry with them? Oh gosh, would he take back his mermaid?! He gaped in wide eyed anguish, holding his breath for what would happen.
And the sudden bark of laughter left him yelling, hiding low behind the counter.
Even the huichol's ears pulled back startled, but it was more his last statement that really shook him. "Oh God, ya were a police officer?" That explained why he didn't like the guy. At least he wasn't a ***** that was good. Looking down, We`rika pet the skittish boy's crown encouragingly. "So why candy? Did i' pay more?"

"Ah-" The ex-cop looked embarrassed. "Oh. I'm sorry, Kiddo. I didn't mean to scare you. Eh, here." The blond frowned, leaning to search the shelves that lined the counter.
Alice's harried expression dropped just a little more at We'rika's question, even as he bent carefully to retrieve a small, silvery mesh bag from one of the displays. "It's not a bad living," he admitted, waiting a moment before putting the pressure on his knee required of standing. "I, uh. I had to retire." Hauling himself to his feet he forced a chuckle, giving his leg a pat. "Can't move like I used to, you know?"
"Hey," he asked Sevilin, holding out his peace offering. "Do you like white chocolate?" In his hand was a little bag of starfish, each a creamy white with various colorful markings. Roughly the size of a quarter.

"Oh, well tha' sucks... I guess..." Always seemed like a sucky job anyway. Dealing with toothless hillbillies and what not. We`rika even got tired of listening to himself, he'd hate to deal with five of him everyday. Ew. The huichol's dark brown eyes followed the ex-officer with vague interest, that is until he held out a bag of white goodness and his long ears shot up excitedly.
Sevilin could hear the amusing gasp that came from his guardian and smiled like a little devil. He knew We`rika's eyes were locked onto the bag like an enemy target. He readily took it with thanks, "Aww yay! Thank you..." The little sea fairy picked one star out of the bag, inspecting it. And before his guardian could start to whine, he gave him the piece and the bag. "I can't eat chocolate though haha, has no where to go..."
Mmmm gimme gimme! The shaman popped the starfish like a pill and munched joyfully. The sugary sweetness tingled his tongue and flowed through the rest of him making him hum appreciatively. "I looove whi'e chocola'e..."

Alice chuckled, straightening himself out to lean on the cash register again. "I guess that makes sense. Didn't really think of that part." He cocked his head at the pair, curious.
They were certainly an odd couple. To be honest he'd never seen anything quite like We'rika before, let alone his small companion. He supposed they got that sort of thing alot, although he couldnt help but wonder where they'd come from.
"Those are raspberry." He smiled lopsidedly. "If you ever have any suggestions, though, just let me know. I try to branch out."

"Oh my gosh!" Sevilin successfully manhandled We`rika out of his way from his overkill of joy. "Can you make salt water taffy?! I loooove salt water taffy!"
We`rika cupped his hand over his ward's small face and pushed him back. "No! If yer gonn pu' somethin' in 'em pu' peyote!"
"What is wrong with you?! Taffy!! Yess! Or or little hard candies that I can suck on til they dissolve..."
We`rika glowered at his little sea fairy, popping the white chocolate starfish in his mouth like popcorn or a fat girl trying to drown her sorrows.
