Child of the 80s
Where I live, it's a small community where everyone knows everyone else's business. There are marriages that cover up pre-marital pregnancies and probably more abortions than I know of... it's sad, but people do it to keep up appearances...
and the truly sad thing, is that it's a highly "Christian" community where the church is more of a country club than an actual place to worship.
That's not uncommon. People use religion as a source of power, leisure, and even for their own lecherous pleasures. (Like that Christian cult where they force women to get married at age 14 to an older man and they have to have sex because "the Bible says so".) It's just how people are.
