FlameOfEternity Eruravenne I dunno how it works in the UK, but I don't think that's how it works here. ANY copying of copyrighted material for any purpose is illegal unless you have permission from the copyright holder. Even fan art, fan fiction and cosplaying are technically illegal, even if you acknowledge the true owner. But since, like you said, it actually is more like free advertising, the companies don't usually do anything about it (plus they have more important stuff to do). However, I think there was at least one case where a fanfic writer was actually sued for copyright infringement. I could be remembering wrong, though. It was a long time ago that I read about it. I'm far too lazy to look it up, so if anyone wants to prove me wrong, you have an open invitation. xd

But to as a personal note: Cosplaying is copyright?? I'm sorry but that sounds wayyyy too extreme to be true. Fan art sounds a tad too extreme also, but if the fan art is being sold it could get edgy. Fan fiction is an interesting one, seeing as the copying of a full sentence or of more than a certain percentage of someone's work is plagiarism, however I'm sure the copying of a catchphrase etc would be overlooked. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure that as long as the fanfiction is for personal use and not being commercially distributed the author is fine.
If you're using someone else's ideas for your own personal profit and you copy to a certain degree, you're basically selling their idea and not yours. Which is one of the things that the Copyright Act is designed to stop.

Kuma Woode a_shy_girl_1999 Another thing that I kinda find funny ... the origins of rick roll ... rickroll started as a 4chan joke that got out ... 4chan has a history with gaia .. and not a good one ... maybe its just a coincidence but I just wanted to bring it up and see what everyone else thinks here.
.......Gaia... How can I put this nicely? ....I can't. Gaia likes pissing off 4-chan. It just does. This all started back to a certain announcement that had a picture of a username called, "Long Username is Loooooooong". That was the first time the amins directly poked fun at 4-chan. Now there are items that are directly based off 4-chan memes. They know they can't be touched because of the server size, so the admins keep doing it. They probably always will enjoy touching the raw points of 4-chan. Unless 4-chan manages to do something big to Gaia that will make the admins stop. However, I don't see that happening.Though with what I have seen of the lovely cesspool that is 4chan, they will never be able to do anything big to Gaia that will have any real impact.

But haven't 4 chaners been responsible for the rash amounts of Gaia hacks recently? Ugh, I know its suppose to be a picture site, but it seems more like a hacker/spoiled teenager site with the way they went after Gaia for the silly cute long cat thats a rip off of kiki.

Unfortunately, I know more about Japanese law than American, for some reason. What I can tell you is that doujinshi and cosplay are both technically copyright infringement in Japan. It is forbidden to cosplay in some anime museums for that reason. Doujinshi is also illegal, but everyone just turns a blind eye to it.
