chadny why ......... is pretty simple . the vulgar latin was spoken by the simple people like the soldiers sent to conquer "Dacia" . The natives of Dacia were the "daci" or the "getzi" , the ancestors of nowadays romanians. You are absolutely incorrect. Classical Latin was what was spoken in the time of the Roman Empire. There may have existed dialects and sub-dialects of Classical Latin, but vulgar latin didnt show up until the Roman Empire's collapse. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the western world deteriorated into barbary that we now call the Middle Ages or Medieval Times. During this time, clergyman (clergymen were pretty much the only who spoke any bit of Latin) [and people in general] were less educated. Therefore, they began mixing Classical Latin with the Vulgate (that which was commonly spoken). By the time attention was brought to this event, the Pope himself was speaking in this Vulgate/Latin mix. So, in order to make things easier (and to keep from spending too much money on their education), the pope assembled a team of monks to compile a new language that wouldnt require much effort to integrate. They assembled what we now call Vulgar Latin. This Vulgar Latin mixed in with peoples' own languages and dialects of Latin to create what we know today as Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Dalmatian, Occitan, and French (which is, deffinately, the farthest from any from of Latin).

Vajrabhairava But romanian, its like the lost sibling of the romance languages. Nobody really talks about it or knows it exists it seems. In that case, I think I just discovered my long lost linguistic relative/bro/sis/cous. Saludos a Romania (Greetings to Romania) Te quiero mucho idioma hermano! (I love you very much my linguistic relative. Lit: my linguistic brother) Romanian seems pretty!

No hablas español in this thread silly. xd I really wanted to learn this language after the "Dragostea Din Tei" (numa numa) song come out but, all I could find was a dictionary. I'm going to learn but, it's one of those languages I couldn't start learning because I'm overwhelmed other languages I love so passionately. sweatdrop

Le piano...
You sure? I've always heard Vulgar Latin evolved, together with Classical Latin, from something known as Old Latin. The higher class spoke CL, while the lower spoke VL. However, it is kind of difficult to trace a line between both, as different Romance languages seem to have a "vulgar latin descent" more "classical" than others, as Sardinian and Romanian. It's also not always possible to say which romance language is the farther from Latin, because it is not measurable. I mean, you can't take a language and say, "this one here is on the middle of the scale, while that one is farther away from Latin". All Romance languages have developed into something very different from Latin, and probably all have maintained something other Romance Languages haven't. Even considering languages as solid blocks is dangerous; when you hear about French, you think about Standard Parisian French, but what about that community of farmers living near the swiss border? They may have lost some Latin structures in their language, or maintained other structures that Standard French haven't.
Anyway, how many Romanian-speaking people are here on this guild? Romanian was the only Romance Language I couldn't recognize a word when I first read it. sweatdrop However, I think it's a very nice-sounding language. 3nodding ... c'est pour jouer Chopin, naturellement

I have a Romanian question. I learn Romanian on Livemocha and they had this sentence:
Femeia este în maşina sa iar bărbatul stă pe canapea.
But they never actually explained some of the grammar used in it. I understand 'Femeia este în maşina,' 'bărbatul,' and 'pe canapea,' but the rest I'm clueless about. Could please someone explain it to me?
