The problem with playing the DS one now Hypno is that Valkyrie Profile now has a specific storyline to it. So jumping in on Covenant of the Plume will land you pretty much in the middle of the story.
The main character is the son of a man Lenneth used as an Einherjar in the first one, who has a vendetta against the Valkyries. So it ties in with the first game. I don't really know anything else about it to be honest. I just know the games follow a plot and some of the same characters keep re-appearing for different reasons.
....
Anyway, let's see how the games can relate to actual Norse mythology and the legends about Valhalla and Asgard.

Really? That seems like a lot of stuff to have in mind. I wonder if there's people in charge to monitor the continuity so they don't screw up after a while.
Ok, I'll let you know as soon as I finish the Covenant of the Plume to tell you my thoughts on it. Even if I haven't played any of the other games, I should still get a good feel of how it relates to the legends about Valhalla and Asgard, right? Well, I suppose I should read up on those concepts first, huh? sweatdrop

Perhaps also watch some of the videos on YouTube as well as look up information about Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria anyway.
I've had Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for two or three weeks now and I'm about 3/5 of the way through it already. It's rather addictive!
I need to buy Covenant of the Plume.......though I've not finished the first and haven't even started the second yet. sweatdrop
I've created a couple of "afterlife" realms (the higher ones) from the idea of Asgard, and likened some of my characters to the Valkyries and Einherjar- though my characters are not "choosers of the slain" and there are no Einherjar, who are the souls of those who have died who have been chosen by the Valkyries. Just from playing the games I got some inspiration. Of course my work is VERY different, but some of the ideas I got have been inspired from those legends/games.

I'll look them up as soon as I get a chance. A while ago I tried to open youtube and the darn site wouldn't finish loading. rolleyes
Cool! I'm glad that game has turned out so great for you. I hate it when a game starts out good and it sort of turns out badly (like FF10).
Let us know when you have gotten that one. But if you wanna buy that one it means you have a DS, right? I can't recall which version you told me you have. Odd, huh?
That sounds great Mel! I'm glad yer work is very different. That's how it's supposed to be. 3nodding As soon as I start to play Covenant of the Plume I'll let you know, ok?

From what I gather of Covenant of the Plume, it's a spin off and not in the main series (like FFX-2), but still focuses on what's happened before in the first two games....so if you play it don't be surprised if there are bits that make you wonder. I've still not got it, but I'm sure I will very soon.
I'm sorry it's taken me a month to see this post though.....
Square have really done their research with Valkyrie Profile. If you look up Norse mythology on Wikipedia, it tells you a fair bit. Aesir and Vanir are two sides of the Norse gods, they're mentioned in VP, with Odin, his gods/goddesses and the Valkyries being of the Aesir, etc. It talks of Ragnarok being the end of the world battle between the Aesir and Vanir....which happens in the game. You collect Einherjar (valiant souls of the dead - though some not so valiant but are useful characters anyway in the game) to transfer to Asgard to be soldiers in the war. They've really put a lot of work into the first game at the very least.
Valkyrie Profile (on the PS1) and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth (on the PSP) are both the same game. The PSP one is a remake.
I've gained a lot of inspiration from playing the game alone, so now I think I'll have to research the real mythology behind it.

Really? That's ok. I'm just glad Square actually made a game for DS cuz otherwise I would not be able to try one out soon.
It's fine Mel! A month is not such a long time anyway... wink
That sounds great! I'm glad they have done some research into this. I remember seeing some concepts that have left me puzzled cuz they don't actually conduct any research before they do them (no matter if they're TV shows, games or whatever). Say, do you take on the role of a Valkyrie in the game and recruit souls then? Is it something like recruiting units on tactical games like FFT?And the Ragnarok battle, how is it exactly?
I had no idea the PSP port was just a remake. I hadn't really heard about it till now.
I'm glad you've gained inspiration from that game Mel. I know not all games can inspire us but I think that the best games usually do. Don't you agree?
