"No, I think at the moment I've pretty much got a good idea of how things work." Dalen's eyes suddenly crossed as the ball he had just thrown and was still watching, suddenly slid sideways into the void of questionable space.
"Ow... alright, maybe one more question. Who posts about an action succeeding or failing? I rolled a 15, so I think I hit. But then do I go on to describe the action (such as how I would swing my sword so it hit someone) or does the receiver? (The person I hit describing how they were slashed)

"Once you see that your attack hit, you'll need to roll for damage anyway. So you can describe your actions upon hitting with the post you roll for damage."

Thomas cursed under his breath as his ball missed. He summoned another one, and busied himself tossing it between his hands. "I have a question. how do conflicting modifiers work? For instance, When I attacked you, did we take the difference of the my attack and your defense and judge my success off that, or did I add my attack modifier and hit, then you added your defense modifier and block?" After thinking for a second, he added, " I hope that's clear enough..."

Robyn walked up to the doorway carefully and tentatively, unsure as she always was in all new experiences, and peered in. The first thing she noticed was the door acting peculiarly, something wrong with it's hinged, but before she decided why and how it was wrong her attention was caught by the conversion of a classroom into a dodge ball room. Bright blue eyes widened even further as she stared for a moment before collecting herself and her arms around the three ringed binder labelled: "Notes". It was a collection of what she'd missed so far, graciously supplied by the administration's office, and she had yet to do much but skim through most of it. At the time it had seemed best to get to the class post-haste but now she found herself regretting what she had apparently missed out on.
"Excuse me Professor James. I'm sorry for popping in unexpectedly but I was directed here for instruction..."
She felt stupid the moment the words escaped her mouth; of course she had been sent her for instruction; what else would she receive in a classroom?!
Loathe to say much more that might suggest that she was slow or stupid, or both, she took a seat closest to the door. It was in the front row, where she always sat in class, not to brown-nose but so that she wouldn't miss anything. She always did have a tendency to daydream and be easily distracted.

Aidan was walking down the hall, minding his own business, when his preternaturally sharp ears heard a curse. He then backtracked, and popped his head in, just as a timid young girl slipped through the door.
Seeing that no one had noticed him yet, and having heard one of the young men ask a question he actually knew the answer to, he popped in again, and spoke up.
"Hey MJ, quite a big class this week, eh? I'll field the modifier question, you take the new girl, eh?."
He looked over at the young man who had cursed ((Thomas)), and continued. "It was your second thought, the total rolls, your plus your attack modifier, IF it equaled or exceeded 15, required him to roll defense, which also needed to total at least 15. After your success, his lack of pain depends on his total defense roll. The modifiers only boost the roll. Now, if you had rolled a 20, you wouldn't be able to miss, even if you rolled a bad Dare roll (which, by the way uses a d12).
"If you hit with a normal attack, a successful Dare roll means it can't be defended against, and deals double damage, but a bad Dare roll negates your attack. If you missed, you could try to use a Dare roll to save it, but if it also went bad, you'd have a Critical Miss, leaving it up to the Judge what happens to you...
"You all got all that?"
After he finished, he realized that he went off on a lecture, and sheepishly glances at MJ, as though to apologize, and slips back out of the room, quickly disappearing down a hall...

Glancing towards the door as a new student slipped into the classroom, Mercurius nodded to her in greeting and began opening his mouth to speak before Aidann stepped in right behind her. Once he had finished answering Thomas' question, Mercurius resumed speaking, his mouth never leaving the position of anticipated speech.
"That's right," he said in absent-minded regard to Aidann's explanation. "And welcome to you, errr...new girl. There's quite a few students on the roll who haven't showed up yet. Your name is?"
"Oh, and I see you have some notes there...they should explain what you've missed so far. A few broken windows, overturned desks, and general mayhem...I don't know why they didn't let us meet in the gym. In any case, grab a ball and let's get your tutelage started, shall we?"

"Robyn."
She answered with as short an answer as possible lest she let herself ramble in her nervousness. She'd taken her seat but now, with the instruction of the professor and example of those around her, she stood while keeping an eye around her for any dodgeballs headed for her head.
"Um... alright." She said, resting her binder on the desk and looking around for a spare ball, and then, as if conjured by that spare thought, she felt the softness of a leathery ball in her hand. She looked to it with slight surprise and an "Oh." Then she shrugged, by the state of the classroom and the other students she really shouldn't have expected anything else.
"Alright...what should my throw modifier be, Professor?"

Mercurius folded his arms and gestured with his head towards the whiteboard behind him...which, having been hit by more than a few balls, was erased in parts...the board read:
For this exerc s , you have a modifier of +5 to hit.
You have a +4 mod ier to defend.
Your d20 roll + modifier must add up to 15 or higher in order for your action o be consid ed a success.
If you fail, your Luck for this xercise is 5, making your Critical Threat 8 (13 - Luck = Critical Threat);
You may roll 1d12 ( is is called a Dare Roll) in order to either a.) turn a failure i o a success b.) turn a success into a critical success (more damage, succeed in a big ay, et depending on the scenario.)
But if your Dare fails, th a.) your success turns into a failure or b.) your failure turns into critical failure (your weapon breaks, etc. depending on the cenario)
"Now, little slugger," he said with a grin and an I-dare-you look in his eyes, "swing for the fences."

Robyn glanced at the white board behind him to read what was written there, the daring look cast her way glancing off her as easily as she'd ever dismissed dares and challenges in her past, and studied it only a moment before throwing the ball in her hand at him (as opposed to to him.)

Mercurius balked a bit at the girl's sudden efficiency with a dodgeball and attempted to move out of the way of the speeding projectile...
[nice with the posting of modifiers in brackets. That helps keep things organized. I don't do it. o.o; But I like it when other people do! Maybe I should start...]
[6+4 dodge = 10] [phailur!] [eh, why not? attempting a dare...]

[threat 8, roll 6] [more phail]
His efforts to dodge were simply not enough to counter the girl's natural understanding of the art of dodgeball. He took it to the face...hard. His attempt at a fancy last-second maneuver had placed him just in the right position to fall backwards and whang his head on a desk as he went down, the ball still spinning on his face as he fell.
Mercurius laid there for a moment, his leg twitching and smoke rising from the dazed expression on his face. xp

With a grimace Robyn went to the professor and looked down at him sympathetically, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she leaned over him slightly to assess the damage, and then spoke with a return of her previous timidity.
"Sorry Professor... I was on the Dodgeball team in highschool. I guess I could have said something.
She was hesitant to offer him a hand up due to a suspicion he might just attack her back to test her ability to roll her defense.
"So is this about the time I would normally be rolling for damage?"

"Nice shot..." was all he managed to get out as the world bobbed and spun around him. Slowly, his senses returned and he stood shakily to his feet. "Errm...yes. You'd be rolling for damage about now...and doubling it since you hit so damn hard. But seeing as how these are less than lethal, we'll be skipping that step...for which I'm most grateful."
He tapped his chin for a moment thoughtfully and continued. "You seem to have a pretty firm grasp on how this thing works. We can keep this up with me exacting my just vengeance upon ye or I can give you a pass and let you get into the action. It's up to you."

"When given the option between having vengeance taken upon me or passing... I'll have to pass and opt for the certification to run amok in your games and wreak havoc - within the confines of the rules that is."
Robyn smiled graciously to counter-effect the brazen words and shrugged only slightly. It wasn't the first time she'd been underestimated on account of her nature and it wouldn't be the last, but she didn't mind.
"Thank you for helping me understand the way things work around here!"
