Yay, now I have a little more. If you have any particularly interesting titles, give me a shout out. I'm a huge reader anyway, so it'll be fun. Yes, even in japanese...

RAWs of manga are relatively easy to find online. I find even having the raws to a series I already own in English is pretty interesting because I can do a side-by-side translation comparison. I find it really interesting sometimes because what is said in Japanese sometimes doesn't translate completely into English, or the English is completely different!

In NYC there's a japanese bookstore. I recently went there and bought one of the only japanese books under 10$. (My sister refused to let me get manga)
It's called おっぱいバレー. If you understand that it'll seem weird, if you see the cover it'll seem even weirder... which is why I bought it. xD
I don't have time to read it right now, but I'm going to over the summer. Hopefully it'll get easier as I proceed, and by the time I plow through it my skill will be better. I know my english is pretty good (when I try at least) because I read tons of books as a kid, and looked up all the words I didn't know.

You read manga right to left. You read left-right, down to next column, left-right. That simple.

Snicker963 That looks like a really cool book I'm probably going to try and get myself a copy. Heres the readings of the kanji, I'm not exactly sure what it would be translated into English though. 学習「がくしゅう」版「はん」世界「せかい」名作「めいさく」童話「どうわ」全集「ぜんしゅう」 学 learn, study ガク、ガッ まなーぶ old kanji: 學
習 learn シュウ ならーう
学習 study
版 edition, publication ハン
世 world セ、セイ よ
界 boundary カイ
世界 world
名 name メイ、ミョウ な
作 make サク、サ、サッ つくーる
名作 literary work
童 child ドウ わらべ
話 story, speak ワ はなし、はなーす
童話 fairytale, child's tale
全 all ゼン まったーく、すべーて
集 collection, gather シュ あつーまる、あつーめる、つどーう
It'll be easier to understand the words you want if you include their context. But this is for you to use to learn. Kanji takes effort and time, but can be easily mastered. If Japanese comes easily to you, Kanji will as well. It's fun; I loved learning new kanji. Some books aren't the greatest, but get some from Japan.

Snicker963 Ok, so I've been studying Japanese for a little while now (about a year) and I wanted to get into some real manga and or books for practice. So I was wondering if anyone knew of some manga/books that are completely in Japanese and not designed to be learning material, simply just something that people in Japan would actually read. Anywhere from as basic as it gets to intermediate grammar is what I'm looking for. So obviously it will most likely only be children's material that is available but I really don't care hehe. I really don't care what genre any of it is, I just want to be able to understand it. So I guess lets just make a list of reading material, not only for me but everyone on the forum since I'm sure other people will benefit from a list like this. Including the level of the reading would be a good idea but not necessary. Edit: I Just noticed I spelled manga wrong >.< Yes I know how it's actually spelled. Do u have a store called kinokuniya bookstore where you live?? they sell comics in japanese. if not, try to find one at an asian store or something. Um, i would recommend something like a comic that has furigana(hiragana next to kanji). because since you've been studying japanese for a year, you probably don't know a lot of kanji. so yeah, also try to find a comic book that doesn't use kanji at all.

One thing that could also be useful would be to find some stories or books online written in Japanese and then use Rikaichan (the firefox plug-in) to help you read. It's a really good way to learn vocabulary too! A good site for e-books in Japanese is http://www.aozora.gr.jp/Here's one of them - The Little Prince: http://www.alz.jp/221b/aozora/le_petit_prince.htmlHope it helps!

Here's a great manga site. :3 http://newsmanga.comThey give the news in manga form. That way it's like reading a manga and a newspaper at the same time. xd (I think this site is awesome lol)

If you're looking for resources to learn how to utilize manga in studying Japanese I'd take a look through Japanese the Manga Way or some of the magazines the author used to edit, Mangajin. The former actually explains pretty well how to use manga and why it's better than, say, a TV show or something of the like.

Niceril Is there anything for like little kids? :O lolz like elementary school level japanese books? Thank you!~ Look around and I'm sure you'll find them. I know I had one store that had such books but I can't remember it. I'm sure places like Amazon have to have SOME books for Japanese parents/grandparents trying to teach their children. Perhaps look there?

Lol, thanks, I was going to help translate this, but apparently you did it more throughly than I did. Basically the book is: "World Famous Fairytale Collection: Studying Edition." I'd suggest looking around for the older "Mangajin", or a magazine that was published around the mid-90s that did a lot of translation of various situations in manga from Japaense to English. It gives you an idea of the process of translation kind of goes. However, this magazine has been out of print for ages (too far ahead of its time, the publisher stop publishing issues in the late 90s), so you will have to look for it.
