(Sorry for lack of punctuation sometimes. writing in English is hard sometimes)

I think it's all pretty much common sense - it's a language like any other ^^ Hiragana, katakana then kanji comes after a basic grasp of the language. The first lesson is usually about greetings (aisatsu) such as

good morning - ohayo
good day - konnichiwa
good evening - konbanwa
goodnight - oyasumi nasai
goodbye - sayonara
see you - jaa mata
how are you? ogenki desu ka?
yes/no - hai/iie

stand up - kiritsu
sit down - chakuseki
bow - rei

ignoring general classroom vocabulary (like "please read one more time " or "please speak more slowly") then self introductions...

Pleased to meet you (lit. This is our first meeting) - hajimemashite
I am ~ Watashi wa ~ desu.
My hobby is ~ Shumi wa ~ desu.
Please favour me - douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu

Basic numbers (1-100) soon followed then basics of writing (10 at a time) bit by bit.

Current/Past tense is too difficult for begginers - so nothing like "I live in..." or "I come from..." Usually, polite versions (like do/play "shimasu" instead of the plain form "suru") are taught, but not very polite (no keigo)

Only pictures used were for writing - to show where the symbols come from.

After this it's a case of building up vacabulary, so "I play~ "watashi wa ~ (w)o suru", adjectives (~is pretty ~wa kirei desu)

Avoid using words and phrases that appear in anime/manga - these can be strange, gender specific (like "atashi" for I) or maybe rude in normal conversation ("ore" for I) Pronounciation should be emphasised if this if for a foreign language. I heard someone say "hiraaaaagana" once. It was very silly >< Some foreign people (mostly american from experience) want to emphasise sounds that have no emphasis...

Sorry, this is long - I am a teacher in Japan. Language is very important to me.

The first words I learned were numbers, animals and colors. Along with some phrases such as "konnichiha" and "gomennasai" and the ever populer sound of agreement or asking for agreement "ne"

The very VERY first word I learned was ether "kawaii" or "baka" lol. yeah, anime.
