Part I – The Sentinel

History: Barkfeather's mother was a hunter so never had time for her egg or hatchling, so Barkfeather was one of the eggs that was passed from minder to minder. This meant that she was never without playmates after hatching but also left her wondering why they seemed to have a stronger bond with one particular female whereas she wasn't far from calling every female "Mother".
As she grew older, she understood why this was and decided that she wanted to give back to the community what she had gotten out of it, thus she became a minder.
Her first companion, a mus called Tiny, was a creature she was given while still a fledgling. Since it was a bit too big to eat, she befriended it and he has since become a great help to her with minding eggs and hatchlings.

Barkfeather swooped on the tree, her companion clutching tightly to the feathers on her back. She could here the mus's chant of "not good, not good" calling at her but she refused to give into his cries to go back. Finally settling on a branch that looked promising, she alighted carefully as to not let Tiny fall. Once he realised that they had landed, Tiny scrambled off her back and chittered angrily at her. "Flying not for mus, flying for noctowls!"
"I know you don't agree with us moving Tiny, but I'm much to big to be living with the fledglings now. It was time to find my own place. This tree looks about right too." Her eyes darted around the area that she had picked to land and she smiled when she saw a sheltered spot near the trunk. "Look over there, we could set up a nest there and there's lots of room to take care of eggs." She was getting rather excited now, she could almost visualise how she would lay everything out. In a little hop-step, she made her way to where she would place her main nest, the place for her and Tiny.
Two branches had grown very close together, with just a very small gap between them which was covered by smaller interweaving branches that were green with the pine needles. She stepped lightly on these, testing them for support. They weren't quite strong enough to support her but it wouldn't take much to get them right. They were however strong enough for Tiny to run all over them, which he did in his cautious way to explore.
"We just need a few more smaller branches to weave in, then we can start really building our new home." Barkfeather chirped happily. The mus just nodded in his solemn way and dashed off to find some pine-nuts to eat after they were done.
