So a convention is coming up soon, about three months, and I told my friend that I would help her make a mudkip costume. Not the whole thing of course, just the headgear. We already have the body worked out. (For hilarity's sake, she owns a blue t-shirt that says "I like me" which is part of the costume.)

I was thinking to attach a painted cardboard fin onto a head band but am unsure if that will be stable. There will be: running, jump, etc, at the convention. I also want t to be comfortable for her. The orange spikes will also be a bit hard. We have limited resources and money, but want to do the best with what we have.

Any ideas on this Pokemon cosplay?

I'd say for the fins, sew them and line them with wire to make them stand and poseable. As for how to get them on her head... No idea.

The idea works in my head, the trouble is in articulating it...but here goes nothing:

Tea's right of course, a wire a fabric ensemble will be sturdier, but attach it to a base that goes underneath the main headgear with the fin coming out a slit on the top. It should survive typical con horseplay with a base giving more room to attach the fins to the headpiece. It'll be more work but it should hold up.

Another option is to make an entire plushie hat (like they do with panda and cat ear hats) with the fins sewn into the pattern. That has the potential to be a bit more fun because after the con... TADA! You have a fabulous pokemon hat! sweatdrop

This makes me want to make a Mudkip hat.

And I hate Mudkips.

I have a blue hat just on case nothing else works. the problem is, I don't know how to sew or how to anything either of you said.

Could I have some examples? Specific examples? Like...what to DO with the wire? I've never made naything before.

Thanks, both of you.

Well, remember, always sew things inside out, then turn it right side out so the seams are hidden. For the wire, just get some floral/florist's wire from Jo Ann's/Michael's/Pearl's/your local craftstore and pretty much just bend a line or two of the wire (depending on how big the head-fin and wire are) and put 'em inside the head-fin like a hand would go into a glove.

Make sure that about an inch of both ends of the wire/s are sticking out of the bottom, though, so when the fin gets sewn into the hat, it'll be stabilized (like how a fence post is a foot or two underground to stabilize the fence)

And for the orange cheek fins... Well, you can do that the simple way (just cut a pair of three-peaked "mountains" out of the fabric and sew 'em together), which is what I'd advise for you. The harder well is, well, more hard but more true to what a Mudkip's cheek fins look like (kinda like three spikes on top of a half circle).

If you'd like, I can try to find from batteries to take pictures of some of my projects to help you understand. Like right now, I've got the same situation with the wire, since I'm making an Espeon hat and I don't want the ears to be floppy. I've got one ear wired already, but have been too lazy to do the other. xD

Redforest
Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down and I'd like to take a minute so just sit right there and I'll tell you all about how I came to this town call Bellaire.

In west Philadelphia born and raised on the playground is where I spent most of my days chilling out, maxing, relaxing out acting all cool shooting some b-ball out side of the school when a couple of guys that were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and said you moving with your auntie and uncle in Bellaire.

I whistled for a cab and when it came in the license plate said fresh with a dice in the mirror if anything I can say that this cab was rare, but i thougth naw forget it, yo homes to Bellaire.

I pulled up to the house i grabbed my things and I yelled to cab yo homes smell ya later I looked at my kingdon I was finally there to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bellaire

(- 'the grim axel' told me to post it...)

That wouldn't've gotten you a warning, since it would've pertained to the topic, if only vaguely.

A picture would be very lovely. I think we will be going with the hat idea.
