I have to side with Asa-chan. You said some other girls liked him, so if you ask him out face-to-face, you're basically elevating yourself out of that group. You're making yourself more noticeable to him. Even if he does say no [and honey, that's not the end of the world], he will still more than likely admire you for having the courage to do it face-to-face.
If he rejects you in person or by note, if everyone finds out everything, they're going to know anyway, right? I mean, it's always a risk you take when you ask someone out. But I think you need to consider the fact that while it might be easier for you to say it on paper, it also might be easier for him to reject you on paper. Now think of how that would feel... maybe like you weren't good enough for him to do it in person, right? Hmm? Karma can be cruel. Don't do that to yourself. Don't worry about stuttering or forgetting what you want to say or saying the wrong thing. You're human, right? It will re-inforce the fact that you like him. I don't know about you, but I would be much more likely to say yes to someone who asked me out in person than by note.
