SNAKES ON A PLANE!

PostPosted: Mon Feb 11, 2008 10:37 am

I feel like you understand what the human form is supposed to look like as a whie, but you're like real sketchy on the details like how arms are shaped or where breasts attach or where hips go or where the bellybutton is.
with these figures I feel like you're thinking in 2d almost. Like ok so here I outlined with a stick figure ok so now there are some circles let put a circle here and there and there and there
you don't need all those circles. they don't mean anything in the context of an actual body. I'm all for simplified shapes but your hips arent a circle, they're more like a cube, and breasts arent just lines

the more you understand the human body, and not just how it looks but how it works the better you're going to be able to draw it.
and like you've done a lot of defending yourself here and in your last thread by showing us more of your art. Like "I CAN do this SEE?"
but we can all tell that you have a lack of understanding, and I think that maybe you also have trouble looking at your art any sort of critically, and you need to start because I don't think you're as good as you think you are.
and I mean I'm probably not either, nor really is any of us, but I think we've come to terms more with it than you have, and you really need to.

like I'm not saying that some people havent been asses but fundamentally, they are right.

and idk the age thing bothers me
i think it was unnecessary to say well i'm seventeen
I'm seventeen
if you were like 12 or something I would buy that but you can'y use age as an excuse when you're 17.
I mean really.

I think its totally fair to say "hey, I'm seventeen and still learning." I think back to what I was making at 17 and it was just awful. I didn't know what to focus on and has a horrible art program to work with.
How you learn is you create, create, create. Even anime-styled things can be a jumping off point. The problem is when you don't stop once you are in college studying art... to an extent. There is a place for everything. The problem is that too many people do it and there is no place for it in the market (outside of actual Japanese anime/manga).

Yeah, its a weeaboo drawing, but I think it was still a good learning experience. The marks made in the hair used the drawback of your materials to your advantage. There was some good experimentation in there. Next time work on your highlights because you have too many of them and they are too random.

One of my teachers who just does crazy amount of storyboarding and marker comps taught us some tricks to using the markers (Prismacolor, Copic, or any analogs). The best one I can tell you is to not stop coloring the area you are filling with a color. Do it all as quickly as you can because when the marker is when it blends together nicely. Blenders can only do so much. Practice some wet on wet renderings to get a feel for the technique.

I probably shouldn't have said it that way.

I've had alot of art teachers but NONE OF THEM CRITIQUE ME. None of them tell me whats wrong. All of them say "Oh thats wonderful" I said "I think it looks wrong" they say "No I think it looks fine.". I have companies trying to higher me for graphics [Vector mostly], I've got art school sending me emails, my work in shows, and I don't know why.

All the critiquing I get is from myself which would cause me to grow slower. Then I found this place and I finally got an honest freaking crit, rather than just "Oh keep practicing I'm sure you'll get better" with no advice, nor direction no matter how many times I ask. I think I'm ******** behind, and I think all my work is s**t. I'm unhappy with all of it and everyone tells me its fine when I know it isn't, I ******** beg for them to critique me and they tell me is wonderful. People with jobs, People with a masters in art, people who I look up to and think are far better than me.

I'm not used to criticism but I try my best to take it as well as I can because I sit around asking for an honest opinion but I don't get one all day. Honestly I feel somewhat happy about it. I wish I could have stayed in art school but we moved. Everytime I get actual criticism I improve and try my best to fix it.
