The darker senrei noticed a bulky purple shape head towards her general direction, and fast. She whipped the air harder but noticed that her strength was becoming sapped. It had been a while since she had actually flown like this before. Minerva knew the motions on how to get faster in the air but it recquired a lot of muscle activity and she had not worked them this hard in a while. The female refused to quit or slow down but in fact sped her pace up with as much effort as she could. She could not afford to take a head start and then lose, it would look ridiculously bad.
Her dark red orbs focused on the sky above her and noticed the blanket of white the speckled the sky. Cumulus clouds. They were always a welcoming sight but then the senrei began to feel the immediate warmth of the sun on her feathers. She resorted to taking deeper and longer breaths while pushing her body to its max. Then the flap of a wing beat hit her ears and she knew that the male was catching up. A small smile formed across her beak at this and she continued her fast pace,waiting for the purple blur she had seen earlier to come into full view.

His wing beats where rhythmic was his heart. ba dum, da bum, ba bum, whoosh, it was a good rhythm and meant his heart was in good condition along with the rest of his body. This pleased him to know after all the hard work he put into keeping fit. He push his wings harder as he climbed, the sun was warm up here but the air got colder. He would have started to take fewer breaths if he could help it but his muscles needed air to keep working like they did, in top performance. So he breathed in deep through the nose, the cool air prickled all the way down his throat and into his lungs. It was uncomfortable but nothing he hadn't felt before. He flew on towards the dark figure, only a yard or two away now from her and the clouds.

If anything, the female stayed at the pace she was at right now. Her body was in the form it was in when she had first jumped off the ground. It eased her flight slightly but now all her past efforts came back to her in a rush of fatigue. Her body screamed at her to stop this nonsense and to just soar through the air with as little energy as possible but her competitive style kept her going. Soon she would have to succumb to her body's need if she did not reach the clouds soon enough.
Minerva huffed slightly and tried breathing through her nose but the feeling was uncommon at such a high altitude. The air was sharp and seemed to squeeze the life out of her body. It had surely been a while since she had flown this high. The darker senrei's pinions flapped in a steady but still fast beat. Her tail feather was whipped around by the air resistance she face but regardless, she still pushed on. It would be very unlike her to give up when she was just so close.
Then the sound of her flying opponent reached her ears once more, but this time it sounded closer. Minerva dared not look back since that would be the end of her current speed. She instead straighted her body a little more and this caused her muscles to scream in reluctance. The clouds came ever closer as she felt the distance shorten between them and her. Though the sound of her competitor came ever closer, and this caused Minerva to wonder if he had not already passed her. She would not be surprised since he probably flew every day and had more experience at this high an altitude.

Theodore's wing pumped harder, he was so close to the prize. The clouds where only a few feet away and Minerva, well he could reach out a paw and touch her if he wanted to. She was so close and would be so easy to pass right now but he stayed where he was. He didn't want to pass her now. He had forgotten to ask her if she does this a lot, if she likes to be up this high or was she just competitive or a show off. He wanted to make she she'd be fine this air up. He knew too well how hard it was on the body this high up. After all he fell from the sky he's first time up here in the clouds.
So he followed closely behind her all the way into the cloud coverage. He as so thought having her bet him would be go brown points.

The brief touch of the silk-like material gave Minerva a large smile. She made it. Her dark red orbs were slightly blinded by the puff of white around her but this did not scare her. In fact, it excited here. The female had managed to reach the cloud that she was aiming for. Her gaze turned back to see how her racing partner was but then a wave of dizziness took over her small form. She needed to be in a lower altitude otherwise her vision might go blank. Minerva opened her mouth to speak to the purple and peach senrei but no words managed to come out. It was already hard enough to breath. Instead, a quick gesture was made with her eyes as she allowed her body to fall down towards the earth. Her head aiming towards the ground, her black pinions clung to her body as she plummeted.
The wind felt good against her feathers but her stomach seemed to turn. She hoped that her sudden action had not worried her male friend but she needed to be in a better place so that her lungs may properly take in the amount of air she needed for a better focus. Her wings soon spread open, catching the air at full force and violently turning her body from a verticle position straight to a horizontal position, as if she were walking on air. Her breathing sped up as she began to pant, that was not exactly what she expected.
