There's not really a "jazz" thread place, if there is, I'm sorry I must be blind. D:
ANYWAY, I just wanted to know if you guys had any tips on jazz band improv.
x__x; Tips, comments, anything would be helpful seeing as I am brain dead.
(I'm an alto sax player myself. :3)

There's a jazz band sticky in the orchestra/concert band subforum, but that's about it.
Anyway, you just have to practice, practice, practice! It might take a while, but you WILL get better as long as you practice. Also when I started improvising I found that it helped to write what notes are in the chord on the paper you're looking at... and I still do that when there are weird or fast chord changes. 3nodding
Edit: I suggested in the admin thread that we make the orchestra/concert band discussion subforum into the orchestra/concert band/jazz band discussion forum. biggrin

Here are some improv tips. First see what chord each measure is based on. Usually the song will show it if not look at the bass part. than play the notes within that chord as your main notes. than play with the style of the music. If its a slow song with longs notes play slow with longer notes. if its an upbeat song play alot on the upbeats...

Agh. I hate improvising! It's such a pain. if you play one note wrong or what not, it sounds horrible. And you can't blame the fact you didn't practice or whatever.
Sorry that I can't help out. Lousy trumpet players, right?
