I love Severus mainly because J.K. Rowling managed to write his personality so perfectly. When you think about his character, he is one of the three most complex characters in my opinion from the books (Dumbledore and Voldemort are the others). Like Gina said, he had a hard home life growing up, and came to resent muggles most likely because of his father. But he still befriended, and fell in love with, Lily who is muggleborn, so that sort of balanced the scale. Then at Hogwarts, despite the fact that they were in the two houses that hate each other (Gryffindor and Slytherin), they were still able to remain good friends. But then there was the incident in which Snape accidentally called Lily a Mudblood because he was major pissed at James and Sirius. Their friendship was never the same again after that no matter how hard he tried to apologize to Lily. Then later, Lily fell for James, and I can imagine how hard that would be on Severus considering that he never really loved anyone else his whole life. Then there is the psychological part of him, and that is where it gets extremely complex. Snape falls in love with Lily, and she never knows it and she falls for James, so that is hard on a person mentally, and I think that had some sort of influence on him joining the Death Eaters because he felt like he truly belonged with those people, and he could sort of be who he really was and they wouldn't really make fun of him in my opinion. When he found out that Voldemort was going to go after Lily, James, and Harry because of the prophecy, he begged Dumbledore to try and help them, so I can imagine that there is some mental war going on his head between wanting to stay loyal to the Death Eaters and not care, and wanting to try everything to save Lily because she is the love of his life. In the memories from DH you see Snape in Dumbledore's office crying and everything because Lily is dead and obviously when someone that is close to you or that you know dies, it will always take some sort of toll on the person's mental state. In his mind, there is another war going on mentally when Dumbledore asks him to spy for him for the Order, and he then becomes Potions Master. Then, eleven years later, Harry comes to Hogwarts, and Snape treats him cruelly. I think that part of this is that he learned to lock away most of his emotions such as love, compassion, kindness, emotions like those. Mainly because of what happened with Lily, he thought that if he was able to lock away emotions like love and so forth he wouldn't be hurt again like what happened with Lily. He was afraid of being hurt and didn't want to go through it again because it was too painful. So he locked them away. And he decided to treat Harry worse than most students because of the fact that Lily chose James, and even though Snape knew that Harry was more like his mother, he chose to see his father in him, and he more resented Harry than hated him. When he died, he died a hero (sort of), and could finally be peaceful for the first time in his life. And I just realized that this explanation about Snape is obnoxiously long, I apologize, but when you get me talking about the complexity of Snape, I can really start to rant.

Now for why Draco Malfoy is one of my favorite characters. He was always trying to act like he was better than everyone else because that is what his father and mother (mostly his father) taught him. They taught him that purebloods are the best and everything, and the way that he portrays his views in the books is really good. But I really like him in the sixth and seventh books. In the sixth, Draco is asked to do something that would be nearly impossible for most sixteen year olds. He has to find a way to sneak Death Eathers into the school, and then he must Dumbledore or else Voldemort will kill him and his family, and to Draco, I think that family means a lot to him. So in the end when Draco is in the tower with Dumbledore, you know that he won't do it because deep down, he is good. He procrastinates killing Dumbledore until Snape can get there and finish the job like Dumbledore had asked him to. In the HBP movie, when Bellatrix is destroying the Great Hall, the look on Draco's face shows that all he really wants to do is to stop Bellatrix from destroying his school because to him, it was like a second home. In the seventh one, Draco, Lucius, and Narcissa are all three Death Eaters I think just simply because they are afraid of what will happen to them if they desert. So in the end they do end up being good. But I really like the end of the DH in the epilouge at King's Cross Station. When Harry and Ron see Draco, they nod at each other, which shows that even though they aren't buddy-buddy, they were able to put aside their differences and become friendly acquiantance (sp?) and are no longer the enemies that they were at school.

Ok...that was waaaaaay longer than I thought it would be, so I think I will just simply cut it off here.

I really loved Hermione, and I really identified with her when I was younger, but my FAVORITE character of all time is Lily Evans. Even though we were never able to learn about her character through observed interactions with others, I find myself really like her - especially with the books and the temper.

Hmmm...Remus Lupin cause I love that's he's a werewolf and has done so much for Harry. But I also love Sirius cause he's the awesomest God Father in the world. I love Dumbledore, he's like my hero! Not only is he gay, which is awesome he says the awesomest and wisest words "Nitwit Blubber Admit Tweak"
But I also love Fred and George... and of course Snape. How could you not love Snape. Sure he's a bit evil and rude, but he means good by all of it (except taking random points of Gyffrindore, that he just wants his team to win lol) But he means good. He's only tough on Harry because of his dad. it's really hard to choose between all them!

Wow, I don't think I've posted in this thread yet. So I guess I have a lot to say. rolleyes

My favorite characters would have to be all the Marauders--James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter--Lily, Severus, and I suppose most of the Marauder Era characters that you meet mainly in fanfiction. I also adore Luna, Hermione, the adult versions of Sirius and Remus and Snape, Harry, Ron, Fred, George, Ginny, Oliver Wood, Flitwick, Hagrid, and McGonagall.

My favorite Era to think and talk about is of course the Marauder Era, so I think I'll wax slightly eloquent.
James is a favorite of mine because I'm a romantic at heart. I love someone like James who consistently pursued his one true love until he matured enough to get her. His talent is undeniable and his trust is always well-earned.

Sirius is honestly pure awesomeness. He's absolutely loyal, gives good advice, extremely talented, and a practical genius at times. Plus I admire how Sirius treads the line between bad boy and good boy. Just enough bad to make him look good, and just enough good to keep him on the right side of the war.

Remus, as several people have stated, is the mischievous bookworm that has loads of issues that hardly anyone knows about. He is extremely easy to admire, and love in spite of his furry problem and sometimes because of it.

Peter is a wonderful character, especially when he's young. I think I've actually worked out how he fit in with the other Marauders during his school years. A bit of a drama queen, expert at listening, entertaining, and coming up with musings that help James and Sirius make connections between various ideas. Plus, he's so much fun to torture, I love him.

Lily is the perfect offset to all the characters in the Marauder Era. Kind enough to befriend Snape, loyal enough to stick with him, and noble enough to know her own worth. She's humble enough to fall in love with James and admit it, powerful enough to hold her own against Death Eaters and Voldemort, and loving enough to save her son and create this whole series for us to enjoy.

Severus Snape is the most wonderfully written "gray" character. His love for Lily redeems him, and his hate for James condemns him. I enjoy his sarcasm, logic, and his ability to keep a secret. I love how he is one of the most beloved and disliked characters of all time. He's a mass of contradictions that only fully gets resolved in the last book.

As for the others I listed, I'll limit myself to one sentence defenses (even if the sentences are a bit run-on).
Luna- Honestly, who can resist the airy imaginative belief that emanates from her?
Hermione- She's the bookish, logical heroine that seems to strike a chord in girls everywhere because of her pure relate-able-ness.
Adult versions of Sirius, Remus, Snape- Because they are who Harry actually interacts with and learns of the Marauder Era from; plus I get to list the same characters twice. :p
Harry- The hero, the character that started the series, and the one that ended it.
Ron- C'mon, you know you loved his ignorance and his joking attitude more than once.
Fred- The Weasley twin that starts most of the pranks and jokes, and pushes the limits.
George- The Weasley twin that finishes the pranks and jokes, keeps the fun just fun and within certain boundaries, while still allowing plenty of enjoyment.
Ginny- I admire her "anything is possible" attitude, along with her spunk and loyalty.
Oliver Wood- No, not because of the actor, but because of his character's utmost fanaticism for the sport he loves.
Flitwick- He's a cute, more-or-less neutral character that is immensely powerful, and hides it well.
Hagrid- He's Harry's first friend and adorable blabbermouth, with a slight bit of a monster fixation.
McGonagall- I love her sincerity about everything; also I love how strict she is, and how lax she becomes whenever the Gryffindor Quidditch team needs the rules bent--her utter loyalty is wonderful.

There, is that post short enough? I think I've done justice to my favorite characters, so I don't think I can make it any shorter. Oh well. ^_^ I've enjoyed myself.
