I think a good companion is:

1. Smart
2. Brave
3. Loyal
4. Not perfect.

I actually dislike Rose because she's too perfect. Too many people and too many episodes make her out to be "the perfect companion" but... there were lots of other companions before her, and alot of them were extremely interesting and very good.

I am also getting very sick of the "love interest" companion angle; which is why Martha bugs me. I would love to see them explore a different relationship angle; or even love when it is subdued and surpressed.

I agree with you. Doctor Who was never about the whole love intrest thing, even if we thought the characters had something going on in the background. ninja
But Modern Day stuff is very soap-opera-y, its like we can't have anything without romance and/or unrequited love.
Its a little sad, really.

Yeah *nodnod* I long for the days of classic companions where it didn't matter if there was an age difference or if the companion was sexy or not... they were *companions* first and foremost.

I always remember the fifth doctor episode where Tegan and the Doc are supposed to go to a ball on this sailing ship in space, and Tegan gets this stunning gown to wear and she comes out all batting her eyes at the doctor and his reply?

"Hm." and walks away.

And of course Tegan just rolls her eyes at him.

I dig that sort of odd, almost interest but you never had to be dragged down by it.

Question: Why do you guys like smart companions?

If they are smart won't that take over the Doctor's role a bit?

Not really, because our favorite Time Lord knows more then we tiny humans could ever comprehend. But it does mean that they can solve probelms on their own a bit, like when they get seperated from the Doctor (which does happen in 2/3rds of the episodes) they can keep themselves alive long enough to get back, and not depend on the Doctor to save them.

Plus, intellagence does alot for the banter between the two, and the Doctor doesn't have to explain things as much.

The Doctor only takes the best. 4laugh

And not so called geniuses who would get a chip implanted in their foreheads.
And are capable of asking questions.
Intelligence isn't everything. Remember Micky. He wasn't all that bright. In fact the Doctor kept calling him "Micky the Ideate." But he was still invited to go with him.

Well, its not the only basis. neutral Loyalty, Bravery, and a good Moral Compass, ect are highly valued when travelling with the Doctor.

And the Doctor was only saying that because... well, he didn't really like Micky at first.
But as the season went on, there was a grudging sort of respect between the two. And 10 liked Rose's family more then 9 did.
And there is a... erm... theory going around that the only reason Micky was invited along then was to put space between Rose and the Doctor.

Adric - math whiz - got himself killed. vv

I'm not sure just what all makes the best companion or what is the most important thing in a companion.

I think Lupine_eyes stated what the three main things that would make the perfect companion.
One strange thing was that the Doctor had a companion that was trying to kill him. But from the clip that I've seen, I'd say that the Doctor wasn't aware that he was doing that.

Why thank you. ^_^

And I think I know who you are talking about. Turlough- with the 5th Doctor. He turned good in the end, though, didn't he question

People only hate Martha because she's not Rose. Modern SciFi fans are strangely allergic to change. They're going to have to get used to the idea
Csthat change is at the very heart of Doctor Who.

Berz.

Can i please marry you? i totally thought i just had horrible taste in people, 'cause i seem to be one of a very few people who actually like Martha

Also, in response to the original query; What makes the perfect companion, well, the answer of course is ME! I would make the PERFECTEST companion EVER! lolz
