Coming from the standpoint of a jazz pianist, and also a jazz bassist (both upright and electric), I have to say that the basss is a much more useful instrument in jazz than electric guitar, to the point that, unless you're pretty established AS a jazz guitarist (and even then it's sketchy), you're liable to be pushed off the stage and told to go home and get a REAL instrument.

I think some guitarists will be after you for that... but I have to say I agree with you.

I think the upright bass sounds better, and is SO much cooler, but the electric bass is easier... I tryed both... But I ended up sticking to the electric...

If you started playing acoustic guitar (6 string), then move to electric, then move onto bass. I've played bass a few times, and going to learn this summer. Bass is just cool to play. but Jazz basses are freakin' awesome to play. The uprights from back in the day.

Bass versus guitar? I'd say bass because it is more necessary in jazz ensembles. Individual artists? It depends on the artist. You can't play B.B. King songs without a guitar

Now, all around, I'd have to say tuba razz Tuba has such a great sound and is super fun to play, especially with a sousaphone

i think bass because the bass has a very rich sound in jazz. the rhythm mix (drums, piano, and bass) are good. the bass balances with all the instruments, especially the trombones. biggrin

Rock on, man.
the bass is pretty much a staple in any good jazz song. a tasteful electric guitar in a jazz song is definately appealing, like icing on a cake, but without the cake itself (the bass), you really dont have much.
