Hey, if you're down with debate, I'm down with it. smile
As far as my level is concerned, I have freshly earned degree in Japanese (which included a nine month study abroad), but I am by no means fluent in it. I think it's given me a pretty strong foundation though. And I can tell you the level of the writer of that book is pretty high.
If you don't believe me about the da thing, find a Japanese girl and ask her "genki?" and I wouldn't be surprised if she answers, "un, genki, genki." That is, if she's not offended by your using plain form with her. smile

I see. The reason I asked is someone said one of those (can't remember which) and someone else said that was wrong and meant 'I like myself.' Mostly I was just wondering, since I got kind of confused there. If the subject was already obvious, I wouldn't really need "Watashi wa/ga" anyway.

katsuo kaito is um=ano? cause i alway here ano when someone says um.. It is, but it's generally used to get attention and not used as much as Americans say "um."
