Hmm, judging by the intelligence of our characters and their personalities I have deducted it happened somethign like this:
Liam: W00T! A pole. Wow, it's really cold. I wonder why I never see any of these in any other part of towns. Maybe it's candy! *lick*
A little later on:
Lex walks back and sees Liam. "Hmm, if Liam, is doing this maybe it's popular.. Perhaps I can pick up chicks by doing this." *lick*
