I've been meaning this for a while, but what it Christmas's true meaning? Is it time with family? Is it shopping 'til you drop? Or is it something else?

Christmas started out as a pagan holiday, and when Rome was 'forced' to become a Christian country, Constantine decided to let people continue their pagan traditions but he 'christian-ized' them.

Other countries had their input as well, Germany the evergreen tree, holly and mistletoe were Druid plants from the UK, that's just a few examples.

To many people Christmas represents many different things, some of which you've mentioned. This time of the year has ALWAYS been a celebratory time, with the Druids and other groups in the ancient UK having 'festival of lights'. The Jews have for centuries had their Hanukkah and I think there's another of their festivals here, even the Egyptians I just read had evergreens in their homes in winter to break the depression of little sun!

I believe it is an opportunity to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We know now, that he was probably born near August, I believe, but certainly not at this time of the year! HOWEVER, what a great time to celebrate who He is, AND the tradition of presents came out of the 3 Kings giving Jesus the presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh, as well as St. Nicholas (who was real!), a Bishop, would leave gold coins in poor children's shoes on Christmas Eve.

Hey, what a nice time to break the winter doldrums, celebrate Jesus AND our families, and just have a jolly good old time! I guess the true answer is, it's whatever you want it to be! A far as a 'true meaning' since God never mentioned it, and it's entirely been thought up by man .... it has whatever meaning you assign it. I hope that helps!! heart

In all honestly, this time of the year depends on who's looking at it.

Christmas itself, though it started as a pagan holiday, celebrates the birth of our Lord. Not only did the Wise Men give Him gifts... but God gave US the gift of His Son. heart
