I've heard some good arguments about what the author's intents could be and what the movie really stands for, but I think the most relevant issue is not what is found when delving deep, but what impression that children will get when they have seen the movie. After all, children will most likely see only what's on the surface. Being it so that the movie portrays what is normally seen as good as bad and vice versa and more importantly that the movie seems to support the rejection of authorities, were I to have children, I wouldn't allow them to see it.

As you've seen in my previous posts, I have my own ideas about it but if I had kids, I still would hesitate to let them see it. The reason being is like Brad said, children are often good at seeing imagery on the surface rather than the symbolism that something may stand for. For instance, when the third movie comes out, I may see some Christian symbolism here and there and reasons behind them, but the kids are probably going to see nothing but God being killed... So if I did let them see it, I would have to explain everything I learned to them later, which may not be very successful since some kids' brains have yet to develop since even I think this is an advanced way of thinking... sweatdrop I know one reason why the review I found was a positive review was that the writer read the whole series to the kids, understood the meanings behind it, and was able to explain those meanings to them...can't really do that in movies until afterwards... sweatdrop On a side note, I remember reading somewhere that even Pullman himself was deeply offended by everyone calling it a childrens' novel because that's not the type of audience that he intended the series to be for xp

Mein Kulturkampf To Everyone: If you have not read the books, you have NO right to condemn them. If we have not read the book we do not have the right to criticize on whether it's a good book or not. Not good as in moral, but good as in it being well thought out and written. Now the meaning of the book will be condemed by those who disagree with it Skippy. Just as the bible has been condemed, dirty books have been condemed, and so on. It's not how well they are written, it's the meaning behind them. And anything being offensive and illtolerant to others believes and religions are somthing I disagree with,.

I know several people that read the books when they were younger and they had no idea that anything in it was in relation to killing God until all this new hype started up about it. The thing most people don't realize is the author said that during a 4 am radio interview and there is no reliable context to be found on what was being discussed when he said it. I tend not to worry about the movie because of my several, stronge Christian friends that don't understand why that was said about the books and the fact that we have no contex, only a single quote, of the conversation that that appeared in.

Personally, I thought it looked cool at first, but when I told my father about it (him with his Christian warrior spirit), told me everything. I was shocked. How could a movie like this exist? A whole awful story about destroying the one we as Christians call our loving father? Outrageous! Ever since then, I have stood against this awful work of fiction with all my heart. I will never tolerate something that stands against all that I believe in. So as a warrior I say; May the light of truth shine on the Golden Compass for all to see it's wickedness and then be burned in the pit of the mind from which it came!

just because you watch or read something unchristian does not make you any less christian. we are christians by believeing and holding God in our hearts, not by what we do or dont do. a lot of athiest pieces depict god, so even tho god and religion may be in something it does not make it not athiest. if an athiest wrote it then its athiestic.
knowing the truth behind all works is very healthy and wise. I had a feeling that this movie was unchristian, and I plan on seeing it anyway, for the same reasons why I read books from other faiths and listen to nonbelievers. I dont respect ppl who badmouth JC and have never read the bible, or who spit at the cross but havent seen the passion.
God calls us clearly to honor our parents, please all respect your parents wishes if they dont want you to read or see something, they are so much wiser than we think (and it took me 22 years to realize that lol)
if you feel to stand against all things athiestic then that is fine... just consider how many ppl stand against all things Godly. as long as we know in our hearts and take His spirit with us then I am sure we can continue to spread His light in this pitch black world.

All I have to say is that Hollywood did the same thing it did to all books that it's made into movies. Completely missed the point! People were drooling over the two polar bears beating the crap out of each other! THANK YOU HOLLYWOOD!!
And what my nondenominational Christian friend (who's been trying to get to the nearest Catholic Church because he's sick of the loons running the nondenominational churches in Washington State) pointed out was that Christians can take the Golden Compass books (he's actually read them) and twist them around and say that the senile God in the story is Satan, not the Lord. And the Magisterium can represent the Commies in China and the Soviets opression of religion. Just throwing that out there...

I got the books for my birthday two years ago and the first book, I saw nothing. I read two chapters of the second book before I bored myself. Then before the movie came out, I read them again. I got very disgusted with the homosexual angels and by the revolt against God, I was thouroughly appaled. But I kept reading, thinking that no one could possibly kill God...how wrong I was! The books are now a home to a family of spiders....

I liked the first book. When I first read it, I loved it. Now that I see your points (and after reading it a second time), I AM kinda disgusted with it. (and Pullman. XC) I also hate the movie because it didn't follow the book like AT ALL. and it really bugs me how they always Eragon the movies based off of great books!!!! (Me and my friends call that Eragoning because Eragon was SO dumb but the book was cool.) and even though my family are Christians, we like the Harry Potter books. And we love them. and since we KNOW it's not real.....

Retermined I've heard enough about the movie to know it's downright bad. D: I agree with you 100% Retermined... I saw a trailer, was interested until I saw the website, and as soon as they mentioned "Daemons" I was out of there...
