Family

Alexander Petulengro: The man who found Ifrit's stone. He obtained the gem stone in his travels from a woman named Tara, and came travelling to The Magic Kingdom looking for answers. He was no fool; he knew this wasn't your average gemstone. He was proven right when a creature one night emerged from the stone. Ever since the Aeon emerged from the stone, Alex has seen it as his duty to take care of the boy.

Júckal: Alexander's dog. A stubborn brute that is never too far behind his Gypsy master. Perpetually annoys Alex by getting into his garbage (no matter how hard he tries to keep the dog out of it) and eating his art supplies.

Friends

Yuna: I met this girl a while ago, back when I was really little. She seemed really neat. It's been a long time since I've seen her though. I wonder how she is.

Jak: I met this boy a while back too. He seemed really quite nice, though. He carried around this little stuffed toy (he called it an ottsel, I think) and he said my cape looked cool. I'd like to meet him again sometime.

X: I met this guy back when The Magic Kingdom went all funny. We didn't hang around too long, but from what I saw he seems alright. His hair was kinda funny, but he has the coolest armor! It's awesome! The owl he hangs around with is a little strange though.

Cedric: The weird owl that X was with. I don't know much about him, though. He seemed a little bit of a blowhard, but I didn't hang out with him much. I wonder if he's as wise as they say owls are...?

Prelude

Ever since that lady traded me that gemstone...
Ever since I held it in my hands...

I knew something about it was different.

I held many stones in my hand before, and examined many gems, but none were quite like this one. Sometimes I can still feel the warm pulse of heat it gave off throbbing against my hand. Even if it was just a gem, it truly did seem...special. It was like...it could express emotion. I know it sounds crazy, but...it was weird.

We as humans (and sentient beings, for that matter) usually derive emotion from expressions, vocalizations, and stance...none of which the gem could express. But yet...I knew how it felt. It was more than just the intensity of the heat he emitted in that form too. It was this...understanding. Like I... could pick him up and go "well, someone's displeased" without any cue.

Sometimes I just know these things.

It was a strange bond, but I adjusted quickly. It actually surprised me the first time... I thought to myself "how...did I know that?" But I've always been fascinated by the unknown, by the magic, by the supernatural. I thank my mother for the influence.

I learned early on in life that not everything could be explained by simple logic. I didn't know it then but to care for this stone an what it would become would let me escape the concrete nature of Gaia today, to replace hard logic with fancy.

With Magic.

With fire.

When Ifrit finally emerged, I was in total awe. He was so childlike, in mind and body, but yet he seemed to have a depth of comprehension human children lack. There was some flicker of understanding behind those eyes. He learned pretty fast too. You could tell when he really got something...that flicker behind his eyes, that spark...it flared to an wildfire and a grin broke out across his face. You could tell when he was planning something too...there'd be a gentle crackle, and a blazing inferno if he was really on to something.

Enough of the fire metaphores though.

He was full of activity too...always running around here and there and climbing on everything. He was a handful...more than a handful, actually. Especially once he learned to make fire. That was certainly an interesting week, I'll say that.

I promptly invested in fire insurance. It was a necessity.

But in the end, even if he is a handful and he does get in trouble...I care for him deeply. I want to protect him from everything, but yet let him taste all of the world that he can. In a way, it's like I don't want him to leave his world of wonder and fantasy and trade it for a cold and unforgiving world like what I had to live in. That is why I'm am greatful that such a place as The Magic Kingdom exists. Not only is it nuturing and good for Ifrit, but it's been nice for me as well.

I...think someday I'll give him his own journal. My mother always told me of how important it was to have a place to writedown your thought and event, so that when your mind begins to fail, you have the ink and paper to help you recall. A mind is not always infallible.

Yes, once he learns more of letters and words, I'll give him his own journal to write his own story.

Entry 1
I came into possession of a weird stone a while ago. I got it from a lady name Tara or something. I found her store in my travels, and while there, I expressed interest is a small gem with the same color as molten lava. I had never seen a rock quite like that before, and when I picked it up, it was smooth and warm to the touch. We haggled and bargained for it, and after some time, we reached a deal and traed. ui gave her some items I had found elsewhere along with a little gold, and she gave me the stone. She assured me that in the end, it would be worth all the money I put into it.

I wondered what she meant, but took it regardless.

I kept it under my pillow for awhile, but then...one night, it didn't feel right. It bothered me that it had been tucked under the pillow. I can't fully explain why, but I moved it on top of my pillow next to my head. It was...very odd.

Then some time later, not too long, in fact, some other people came by, wanting to work out a deal with the stone. They were kind enough to explain that the stone was, in fact, their's and that Tara had been an old business partner or something. Apparently, she left and their parting sentiments were none too friendly, and so she stole the gem. So, they hinted at wanting it back. I told them I had lost it (it was under my bedcovers) and that I'd look for it. I don't know why...but I had grown attached to the stone. After all, I had paid for it, it was mine now. It was just another odd occurance; normally I'm not that greedy. But for some reason, I felt compelled to lie so I could keep it. I'm ashamed of what I did, don't get me wrong, but I felt....I felt almost like a mother wolf taking necessary measures for protecting her young. Bizzarre.

In the end, I went back to Tara and as I was about to confront her, she hurriedly gave me back the items I had given her, and ushered me out quickly. I suspect she knew just what was going on.

I returned home and took the gem out of hiding. I knew that even though I had a great attachment to the item, it wasn't mine. I had my items I had bartered away back, and so it just wasn't right to go on keeping it. When the other owners came back, I quickly proposed an offer.

The same offer I had proposed to Tara for the gem in the first place. They deliberated for some time, but eventually agreed and took my items in exchange for the stone. They said that it was perhaps better this way as I had grown attached to the stone, and it to me.

The gem...was attached to me? I wasn't sure what that meant (a lot of mystery surrounded this stone, you see), but I didn';t give it much thought. I went to bed that night, the stone next to me on the pillow as always. I expected it to be just another average night. Oh, if only I had known!

I woke up early the next morning around sunrise as always, but something...was different. I could hear the soft sound of breathing from next to me, warm puffs of air brushing my ear. I rolled to my side slowly. At first I just thought Júckal had climbed up into bed with me again (the damn dog has a habit of doing that on cooler nights), but when I turned to face the brat...I found it wasn't quite what I expected.

A small creature about the size of a younger child was curled up next to me. He was certainly not human, I can tell you that right off. His whole body was covered with short, soft mocha-brown fur, a bright orange mane spilling down his back from his head to his little rump. Four horns poked through his mane, the first set curving down around his face, about even with his jawline. The second set weren't as curled, but rather curved back and out, ending about even with his shoulderblade/mid-back. Around his wrists and ankles were beautiful gold bangles, and strung around his neck was a little beaded necklace. He looked almost like a little dog, but with a shorter muzzle and more human-like appearance.

I rolled out of bed, examining the creature. How queer. I had never seen anything quite like this before. I wondered just where the imp had come from, and how he managed to find his way into my bed. But then I recalled the gem. The gem! The little sprite must have come from the gem! That would explain what those two people had meant when they said the gem had become attached to me....and what they meant when Tara had told me it would be worth the gold.

Still, I wasn't sure what this creature was like. But I was willing to learn. It stirred some time later as I was making breakfast. Júckal lifted his head, but put it back down. Usually, if the dog sensed something was wrong, he'd bark like a fool-- and Júckal wasn't normally a barker. It was how I could determine if someone was good or bad; that dog was a marvelous judge of character, after all. With Júckal's approval, I relaxed some, turned to face the creature. The Aeon, as the two had explained it (though back then I assumed it was just a fancy word for gemstone). He sat up, scrubbed at his eyes with the back of a paw and clambered out of bed. He streched up tall, yawning all the while. He tossed his horns and blinked a bit.

He glanced at me curiously, golden eyes wide with bewilderment. He waddled up to me shyly, taking tentative steps. He looked me up and down and asked "Are...are you my mama?"

He asked it with such innocence that I had to smile. "What makes you say that?"

He blinked and looked for a moment like he was thinking. then he thrust out his arm and pointed at the fur. "We're th' same color." he said, pointing at me. He was right; though I didn't have fur, my skin was the same brown-tan color his fur was. "Yer hair an' eyes are different though." he finished.

He was right there too. My hair was anything but orange-- it was a dark brown and fell aside my ears in loose curls. My eyes on the other hand, were a dark brown with a slight reddish tint, making them almost burgandy. Actually, other than have the same 'skin' (and I use the term lightly) tone, we looked almost nothing alike. But it seemed that was enough for the aeon to draw his conclusion.

"Indeed." I said. "But I'm not your mother. Mothers sare most typically female."

Ifrit looked at me, and then nodded. "Are you my father than?"

I shrugged and gave a small chuckle. "I guess I am."

I pulled a seat out at the table and gestured for him to hop up. He planted his hands on the seat and swung his knee up, pulling him self up onto the chair. He spun around and faced the table, looking for his meal expectantly.

That morning was the first time I had breakfast with him. It was the first day we spent together. It's been a week since then, but already he's grown exponentially smarter, soaking up information like a sponge. He learned at a very rapid rate to begin with, but seems to have leveled off. He's mentally on par with most children his 'age' now, and his learning seems to have slowed to an average rate.

I shall keep this log on my new child's growth, updating with important events and general observations. Already I can tell, though, I'm in for a ride.
