look at your avatar's hair, the idea is you want to first place a light color that you want to use as his hair color, then you can use a darker version of that hair color and make lines to show the strands of hair, its very important to think of your character's hair as groups of strands of hair. if you notice your own hair, it usually grouped into different groups of strands of hair, unless you have a plain hair were the hair just goes straight down, then its just one group. Then what you do is use smaller brushes with darker versions of that color you used, to define the groups of hair, and then an even smaller brush with darker version of the color to make smaller hair, meaning u have to make a lot of lines define the strands of hair. It will look good because u will find that the parts that u don't do the line will become the light part of the hair, look at your own avatar to see a really simplified version of this idea. And if u want to touch it up, you can think of whatever is the color of your light source and use that same color to add a few high lights to the hair.

I usually do the hair strand by strand....

first off i start with the color pallete.. 5 colors, 1 is the lightest, 2 is the semi light, 3 is the base color, 4 is the semi dark and 5 as the darkest shade.

decide where your lighting is. it's very important.

next, with your base color, flatly color the entire hair part. then lock the transparency of the layer. (if using photoshop) with low flow and opacity, use color 2 to color the lighted part and color 4 for the shadowed part.

then...create the strands...with any color on your pallete( depending on the lighting too, of course) color them with a small pointed brush.. example, you used 10 px to color the entire hair, use 5px next for the strands..then 4px..then 3px, then 1px. and remember to use low flow for these so the strands would look smooth. ^_^

but if you want celshading, then it's entirely a different story.

I do each strand as well. For realism anyway.
It takes a lot longer than other methods probably, but it's just what I've been doing for so long.

If you want a tutorial for generally drawing hair, try this link here. I used that set of tutorials when I was first starting to draw and they were all really useful.

If you want something that's more based on coloring, you can look at this thing here. It's actually tablet based, so it may not work so well for you, but you can take the concepts behind it and apply them in other areas anyway.

Hope that helped. Hair is a tough thing to get perfect, but it's actually pretty easy once you get the gist down. ^_^

Strand by strand? Wow... I don't know about the rest of you but I don't have the patience for that. All I can recomend is short hair is often easiest and can be really fun, you can make it spiked or anything. Make sure when doing hair you always make a few stray strands because, despire what some shampoo adds say, no hair is perfect.
Long hair is fun, you can do a lot with it to!

Try looking at photos! That is the best way to get an idea of peoples hair. Magazines are a great source because they tend to exagerated things such as hair so you can get a better idea of how it looks and, if all else fails, think of a direction for wind to come from, a length of hair and play around with it. Nothing is better then practice!
