Maiko seems like a high school romance. Simple dating and making out. Just because they're together now doesn't mean they'll stay together forever.
Agreed. If they never actually talk to each other, chances are the relationship won't last.

So true. Teenage hormones kick in at that age.

He's basically an emotional slave. Mai controls him using emotion and words.

I like Mai a little more towards the end of the series, but I seriously think her and Zuko are a terrible couple. I go for him and Katara because not only are they opposites, but Katara has a mind of her own and isn't afraid to tell Zuko straight-up how she feels. Zuko also seems to be a lot happier around Katara than Mai. Mai just seems like a lifeless doll.

I agree with you all the way here. I warmed up to Mai more when she saved Zuko at the Boiling Rock, but pairing them up at the end was so pointless and annoying. The whole interaction between Katara and Zuko is alot more alive and interesting. ^_^

Not only is she a lifeless doll, but when Zuko's around her, he too becomes a lifeless doll. That's probably my number one issue with Maiko.

And like on The Beach, what Zuko tries to do for her in the name of affection completely misses the mark with Mai. It isn't good when he has to do all these things trying to get a reaction from Mai when she refuses to see that he's even making an EFFORT to give to her. It's not a great relationship to have one who gives in an innocent and loving fashion to one who just says "eh, maybe stupid girls like crap like that."

TLDR, if Mai REALLY cared for him in the way that the show shoved in our face that she does, she would have at least been tickled by the effort and the obvious fact that he was thinking about her. But she just rejected it because she didn't like what he gave her and that definitely shows that she's self-centered.

Emotional slave? Yeah, I'd say so.

Ah, you pin pointed it there. The emotional value of the relationship was just not there, and it was foolish to pretend all was great at the end. The whole part at the beach where Zuko gets her a shell and Mai rejects it just angered me so much. He was trying so hard to be good for her.

Me too, me too.

See, I know that Mai's supposed to be the 'goth' apathetic character, but really, whenever Zuko's brought up before that point in the show, she gets all twitterpated(for lack of a better term, lol) and blushes. That shows that just thinking about him is enough to get her all flustered. Which is fine.

I mean, come on, back when I was 14-15 and at Homecoming Dance, my boyfriend, who was at the time pretty much a very good friend and not anything romantic, asked if I was cold(the gym was like an ice locker, lol) and put his arm around me, which was pretty much the most physical contact we'd ever had. I swear to god I musta lit up and I remember having this goofy little grin on my face just because he offered. (good thing it was dark!)

And here Mai is, at the same age, and apparently totally head-over-heels for Zuko, and he makes effort after effort, and...Nothing?

Woooow, Bryke, brilliant. You really don't know how girls work.
(explains why Katara's side of the romance was completely absent until the last five seconds)

Proves that she's a real rich girl at heart, either way; if it doesn't please her, then it doesn't count, even if effort was made.

I know! Before they started "dating", even mention Zuko's named caused Mai to blush.

Aw, your story is so cute! Your boyfriend was quite the gentleman. 4laugh

Yeah, I can't understand why, if Mai really does have feelings for Zuko, that she doesn't blush or get shy in any way. It really bothers me. Zuko's such a sweetie, too, trying so hard to be a good guy for her.

Hahaha! Agreed! We can tell how much Bryke knows about realtionships from both Maiko and Kataang. The whole "Katara falling in love with Aang right after the war is over, though she shows extremely minimal signs of any feelings before then" was really brutal. I had a feeling they would end it with Katara/Aang only because they probably thought Zutara was too complex (which is why it's so appealing). I wouldn't have minded the Kataang so much had they not just thrown it in there.

The Mai and Zuko scene was fourty times worse for me, though. I mean, come on. Last time the pair saw eachother was the Boiling Rock where Mai was being put in prison. For all Mai knew, Zuko could have died within that span of time. So when they remeet, what does she do? French kiss him and then threaten the guy. My gosh. What an abusive relationship. o_o
