Against better judgement I joined another religion discussion. An atheist was pretty aggressive against religions, giving simple "evidence" that gods don't exist. I got postive feedback on my comment though, and I liked DallasII's reply in the end... figured you might have some input I haven't thought of or something.

I think it's sad people care so much about others religions. If you read the original ideas to most religions, they are good. Islam is alot about helping poor, in way after way, despite their anti-women approach these days.

Many use religion as their team. We're this team, you're the other team, so we don't like you. Or, if you're breaking some minor rule of the loads of rules and recommendation given, some take upon themselves to judge others. (Let those without sin...) Currently many of those are bashing gay people, but they're just one group in a long line. Women and blacks were before. Scientists before that.

Almost every religion has good ideas. Almost every religion gets twisted, if the wrong guy becomes priest.

Alot of people need to mind their own business, including the person who made this thread. If everyone could just keep to themselves mostly, ask for help when needed, and give aid when they can, the planet would be alot better off. I don't consider that realistic. However, alot of people can do their share, to make things better.

I'm atheist, for the record.

That is the most intelligent thing said on this board.

Before I used to think that people chose to believe in a religion because they were suicidal and they needed a way to "save" themselves. But now, I kinda realize that you guys know what you're talking about. To spend most of your whole life beliving in something... It must be really special to you then.
I do not believe in god myself, and I probably never will. That just means that I will have to find some other way of keeping myself going... I hope the other athiests get help and find a good life in the future. With or without religion at their side.

I'm an atheist and probably always will be, but I think most religions are ways of controlling people, or as a refuge for when life gets tough, and you need an explanation for when bad things happen. I think religion is a good thing in that it teaches good morals, and creates good cultures, but I've never believed a God or Gods, and can't see myself doing so. I appreciate religion in other people - I admire strength of faith, and the way of life that comes from acting on your belief. I'd never ask a friend to convert to Atheism, just as I wouldn't expect them to try to convert me to Christianity or whatever. I think your religious beliefs are a deeply personal thing and should be respected by everyone, so long as it doesn't cause harm or distress in any way to others.

I'm Jewish-Agnostic... but I do respect all other religious beliefs, including the lack of religion.. I believe that everyone needs to believe in something, and if you can't find something in your existing life to believe fully in, then people need to look for hope of reward or fear of punishment after death... I do believe, that is where the basis of religion came from...

Yeah, every religion should be respected. A majority of intolerance comes from the adults already set in their ways. Just in general, not all adults are like that. It seems the younger generations are much more tolerant of each other.

I am not atheist, Im a pagan, anyway, religion is simply because of a psychological need to believe in something, in other words, it gives one a reason to live. Without religion it gets hard, realizing that after your gone, there is nothing, that you will never again be, or exist. Religion is also a way to come to terms with the infinite. see previous sentence, it goes for this as well.

Well, i would like to point out that "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" is supposed to point out that we should NOT judge one another because all of us have sinned at one point in time, and that the only one who is fit to judge us is God. But otherwise, I would agree with you that clergys have messed up their religions quite often. 3nodding

That was precisely what he said.

I agree with you entirely, always have. I've never understood the need to destroy someone based on their religion. The church I was a part of told me I had to convert people, to "save" them - but I never understood how a God who loved so much, who gave so much of himself to his children, could possibly condemn someone for following different beliefs while retaining a good personage. I mean, why does it matter if God is male, female, or both? Why does it matter if he/she is called Zeus, Thor, God, Allah or any of the other names that have been created? Somehow, I don't think God particularly cares if you give him a nickname. Though "Goddie" might not go over terribly well.

You all know where my beliefs lie; with the God and the Goddess. They are still part of a whole, however, which is very similar to the Christian God, to the Islamic God, to any higher power you can come up with. There are consistencies between every God, from Allah to Re to Yahweh, Astarte to Artemis to Isis.
