Ok, just turning this into a thread to bring up some other thoughts I've thunked.
I've always wondered, what could've happened if Zhao had killed the ocean spirit, instead of the moon spirit? Yue says that the ocean is their life, and the moon their power (in different words...), so if Zhao had killed the other spirit (La?), would the entire tribe simply have died?
In the first episode of Book Two, Zuko and Iroh cut off their top knots. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that symbolize they're abandonment of the family or something? So one would think that no matter what, after that, Zuko shouldn't have been accepted back home...
