I've read up on hybrids a little bit, but have come to the conclusion that other then being eco-friendly there is no upside to them.
Anyone differ in opinion?

actually dispite what advertisements say gas electric Hybrids are not Eco-friendly far from it. Most of Elecrticity is produced from the burning of coal which polutes the air. The only reason that they can say that they are eco friendly is because a small percentage of electricity is made from wind, Nuclear power plants (i know not that eco friendly however car manufacturers argue that Nuclear Power plants do not produce green house gasses), water, sunlight, and creating energy from the subatomic level. As for uses the only use of having a hybrid is so that you can stick it to the oil companies and use electricity insted and if you start hating you electric company then you can buy from the oil companies.

How does a gas electric hybrid get it's power from coal? Last time I checked, the gas engine charges the batteries, and depending on the situation, runs the vehicle between 100% gas/0% electricity to 100% electricity/0% gas.

The main problem with Hybrids are that the batteries are very toxic, to humans and the enviorment, so you can't just throw it in a scrapyard.

Last time i checked electric cars plug into the walls of your house. The electricity from the walls in your house came from power plants. these plants burn coal to turn turbines that produce electricity.
Gas engines charging the bateries that's funny. The gas engines cannot magically creat this energy for the batteries when they are powering the car. The only benifit i guess would be when your in trafffic or at a stop light. however there is technology that takes the engergy from braking to power battery cells but no car in the world has this technology yet. I don't get why you would be under the impression that a gas engine would power a battery that would power a car. Now we could be talking about two different types of technologies here. There might be some engines that do charge batteries from the engine but none that i know of please send me a link

You mean just pure electric cars. Hybrids use gas and electricity, but they don't plug into a wall

I dunno why this is so hard for you guys to understand here. Most Hybrids around are "plug-in hybrids" check this link. There are other types of hyrids. A hybrid by definition is a vehicle that can use multiple types of fuel to run. So it wouldn't surprise me if there was a different type of hybrid that you are talking about. the first post was unspicific as to what type of hybrid he was studying. I assumed that he was talking about the traditional more popular gas/electric hybrid. Other hybrids include hydrogen/electric, hydrogen/gas, hydrogen/desile, gas/hydrogen, solar/gas, desile/solar, and so many others that i can't even name. So before you bash me about my comment think just a little, alright?! and the next time that you say hybrid specify what type to avoid this confusion.
In your wiki link it talks about using 3rd rails in the future is this what you ment? 3rd rails would be a horible idea and would never be used in the future.
you can however plug a hybrid into the walls of you garage. Most newer garages are hooked up to larger curcuit breakers that can handle the voltage leading to the car. This is because a lot of people are adding workshops into their garages and engineers have to acomidate for the voltage needed to run a table saw or a larg drill press. If your curcuit breaker cannot handle the voltage you simply replace it.
