I've never heard of Alex or the girl before. It must be one of those gundam shows I know nothing about.. Is she any good??? ^.^

Not really. She's the reason Alex got destroyed gonk the inexperienced rookie crying
But her and the Gundam are from "Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket". It's a short 8-episode Gundam series that takes place in the final month of the one year war (from the original series) and chronicles the fight between a Zeon special ops team trying to destroy the latest Gundam project: the RX-78NT1 codenamed "Alex".

Yeah... well only one pilot succeeded in destroying Alex. And *spoiler alert!*
The enemy pilot turned out to be the Gundam pilot's boyfriend, who secretly worked for Zeon! Chris unknowingly kills him by ramming her beam saber through his cockpit while his Zaku beheads the Alex.

scream So not ONLY does her gundam get destroyed she KILLS her BF in what has to be the most messed up mission this girls ever been a part of. Lovely. That sucks. I'm not watching this one ever then. reminds me too much of when Kira killed Nicol. crying Why do all my favourite ppl automatically earn a death sentence.?

Well I wouldn't push off this series just because of it's tragic ending. It's very deep and shows the effects of war in a colony that never saw it coming.

No, she lives. The Alex is totaled though. They don't even bother fixing it though, because the war ends a week later.
However, many ideas from the Alex (panoramic cockpit, magnet coating, Newtype use, etc.) go on to develop newer mobile suits such as the RX-78GP03 Gundam Stamen, MSZ-09 Zeta Gundam, and more!
