Grimicing, but in a friendly way, Walter backed off from Leolin and held up his hand to ward off further preening. Kalypso sometimes did this to him, but she understood the meaning of the word "No." Her dubious owner had trained her well.
"That seems fascinating to me. My family had gryphons, but they were really my father's." He would see the gryphons on occasion, especially Old Sieg, but always felt they were none of his buisness. His brothers were too busy studying to become successful businessmen to care about riding gryphons, thus Walter felt pressured to do the same.
Only now as he looked back did he realize that his parents wouldn't have cared one way or the other, which was how his nose got stuck perminently in history books instead of finance. As the youngest son his responsibilites were lax and his parents took pleasure in spoiling him (undobutedly his brothers were spoiled as well, but while they were spoiled with oppertunities Walter was spoiled with freedom and chocolate cake). If he wanted to he could have become an expert on gryphons. The fact was, he just never thought of it.

"Ah!" With the sharp noise, the griffin quickly assumed a sit and began to stare at the chicken at Laura's feet as if it were fascinating. Making sure he would leave Walter be.
"You both are really lucky..." Laura murmured in what seemed to be admiration, but not quite managing the right emotion. "I wish I'd been able to grow up with several griffins to see how they act together. The ones in the wild were too dangerous to get near, and Leolin acts more like a puppy than a griffin."
With a small smile, Laura set a hand on Leolin's side proudly. "Leolin trains daily at Lord Remiel's home. My brother hadn't much money, but we managed to make a harness for Leolin to train in and add weight to."

Patience nodded in response to Laura's remark about how Leolin trained. That would have been what he would have guessed. Though he had never participated in any races, for obvious reasons, including that he had not owned a griffin, he knew the principles behind training racing beasts. The Eyrie had a fantastic archives, if one was inclined toward reading and studying, as few in the Eyrie were. Patience had been the only one.
"The griffins I was raised with were working griffins. They were trained rather like winged warhorses." He shrugged. "When I left, I was a little surprised to see that griffins were kept as pets, and by people who had not been raised knowing how to keep them and care for them."
These were all true things. Selectively true, but true, nonetheless. He had discovered that much had changed in the world outside the Eyrie, and that few knew of the Eyrie's existence anymore. No one, in fact, that he had met since his departure, though he assumed that someone must know of it, somewhere. Or perhaps he was mistaken. He didn't really care.
A thought struck him, and he put it into words:
"If you have dealing with nobility, is it possible that you have heard of a man called Gethsemene FaHannoth? He is a lord of Unshennel, I believe?"

All this talk about racing gryphons made him wish he had invested more time with the gryphons on his father’s estate. Perhaps he had wasted an opportunity. On the other hand if he had devoted himself to gryphons there would have been a hole in his life, because he would have never discovered the joy of history.
Patience’s description fit Walter perfectly. Even though he knew in his heart he had done all he could for Kalypso her strange behavior left him in the dark. He would have to get Patience’s opinion at the next opportunity.

"Leolin was a pet at first," Laura said with a smile on her face as she unconsciously began scratching Leolin's mane. "If my brother hadn't seen racing in a city, he wouldn't have started training Leolin to race."
Turning, Laura looked to Walter curiously. "You said you had a griffin, didn't you? What kind of griffin is it?"

Patience nodded. He could understand human beings well enough to know how things could catch a person's fancy. However, his attention was mostly captured by her next words, that the well-dressed, well-fed man owned a griffin. That was interesting. He recalled that the man had mentioned that his father owned griffins, but he hadn't been sure that the man would. It wasn't like griffins were exactly easy to keep, even for someone who was used to keeping them.
He was nodding a lot, he thought to himself. Which was nothing out of the ordinary. He had always been one to be silent when he could communicate thus. Except on a few topics, on which he could talk for hours. But those were few and he could always curb his tongue when it was necessary.
"Yes. I, too, would like to know."
