You should ask your doctor about it. I searched and only found cigarettes increase your risk of getting blood clots. A friend of mine in on birth controll, and she smokes and so far she is ok. Though I wouldn't know, so you should just ask your doctor, at least ask "how does cigarettes cause blood clots" if you don't want him to know you smoke.

Oh yeah, I was trying to think of a way around having to tell her I smoke Marijuana. That's a good idea.

I suggest being upfront with doctors about your smoking - especially ones that prescribe you medication.

That said, nicotine is a vasoconstrictor - it constricts blood vessels. I'd imagine that's why it adds to the increased risk of blood clots when using hormonal birth control. THC is a vasodilator - that's why it causes "red-eye" in some people, the blood vessels in your eyes get larger and become visible. Therefore I'd hypothesize that the it wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks. That makes sense.

But can't doctors like, have you arrested?

That would be my fear.

The only things a doctor can report to legal authorities about you are if you have certain infectious diseases that the CDC needs to know about (TB, for example), if you have suicidal or homocidal intent, or if it's related to the abuse of a child (or elderly person), sexual or otherwise. They're mandated to report those things; everything else is covered under both confidentiality laws as well as the American Medical Association's Code of Ethics - which isn't legally binding itself, but taken about as seriously as the vow of the confessional in the medical profession. smile

If you're a minor (I don't think you are), it's POSSIBLE a doctor who feels marijuana use is a form of self-harm can disclose it to your parents, same as they could disclose an eating disorder, suicidal inclinations, or cutting. If you're a legal adult, there's nobody to tell.

And just you saying you've smoked pot, even a positive drug test, isn't enough to get in legal trouble anyway. Possession is 9/10ths of the law, so to speak. I can go up to a cop and tell him that I smoke weed every day and I'm stoned off my a** right now, and while it'll give him probable cause to search me and possibly get a search warrant for my car and house, in and of itself it's not prosecutable.

You can say something like "I heard that smoking increases your risk for blood clots with birth control pills - Off the record, do you know if that danger is associated with recreational marijuana use as well as cigarette smoking?

Yeah I'm not a minor so that's cool. Awesome that you told me, I'll have to tell all my friends too becuase I know one kid that's been lying to doctors about it for years...

Anyway thanks for the info. I really appreciate it.

Aye, what Shoujo said.

My doctor knew I smoked herb. And meth, actually. She discouraged me from the meth, and eventually I admitted she'd been right, but her only thing about the marijuana was to caution me about keeping my sense of judgement while stoned.

Anyway, if doctors could have you arrested for smoking herb then they wouldn't be out here writing recommendations, hey?

Docs' first responsibility is to the patients, not the law. Telling something to a doctor is as confidential as telling it to your lawyer. 3nodding
