Thank You.

This sticky is dedicated to you, our tutors and our critics. Whenever you tutor, critique, or give advice to our guild members, you help this guild fulfill its main purpose. Dedicated, educated members like yourselves make an army of helpers that give meaning to the name School of Dedicated RolePlayers. As such, we would like to thank you, and to make your continued service in this guild as easy as possible.

A Little Bit Of History.

While our guild page may say Established on Wed Aug 25, 2004, the guild itself is much older than that, having been created before the GGN, sometime around 2003 I think.

Back when the guild was first thought up, Extended Discussion was more of a free-for-all and I'm pretty sure that it didn't have any subforums. Ai Leen had started a thread critiquing RP posts, which I (Penden) found incredibly useful. I was so happy to meet so many good RPers and writers that when someone mentioned having our own guild, I hoped right on it. Thus, from the beginning, this guild was designed to help people improve their RP writing and as a meeting place for RPers of all skills to meet up.

We were in the Guild Spotlight on Gaia in July of 2007.

Where You Can Help.

There are many areas of the School of Dedicated RolePlayers guild where we could use your help. We have new members joining every week, even on a slow week. On a busy day, we have hundreds of new join requests. Many of these join requests express a desire to learn more about RPing, whether the person joining has just heard the term for the first time or has been RPing for years. Many of these members actively seek your help once they are accepted into the guild, but there are many places that they can do this. Below you can find the forums and stickies that can most use your critiquing skills.

If you have any questions, you can PM any of our mods, which you can find a list of at the bottom of the guild home page.

Advise on Critiquing.

The majority of a tutor or critic's work is explaining to the person that you are helping what and how they can improve their work. But critiquing can often be a thankless job, and a lot of times you do not get to see the end result of your efforts, because most people progress slowly in learning to RP and write better. In order to try to make your jobs as easy as possible, here are some pointers from some of us who have spent years critiquing other people's hard work.

When Critiquing:
- No personal attacks!
- Say something nice first
- Warn if your critique is long or "brutal"
- Follow with things that need work
- End with some suggestions for new elements that could improve the picture
- Refer writer to a guide or website containing more information
- Respond to rude comments with short posts or not at all
- Do not try to make every critique a novel: you'll burn out
- Try not to make your critique longer than the passage being critiqued
When being Critiqued:
- Be prepared for a brutal picking apart of your art
- Don’t take it personally! Separate yourself from your work
- Perhaps set your piece aside before getting crits to help with emotional distance
- Respond to each critique
- Thank people who have given you valid critiques
- Announce if you are going to submit a revised copy of the work
