We learned in science that plastic is actually made of oil. Thats why its so bad for the environment. I mean can we at least make something that DOSEN'T involve oil???

I didn't get to read all of the article... I stopped buying bottled water a while ago. My mom used to buy Dasani, and I'd refill the bottles to cut down on plastic waste. Then I found out that those bottles have a recycle number of one on a scale of seven. Anything below a five can leech into food/liquid if it's reused a lot. I think I'd trust tap water a bit more than generic bottled water. Bottled water is sometimes filtered so that there's absolutely nothing of value in it. At least with tap, there's a bit of fluoride. I'm not sure how good chlorine is for you, but still..
The thing about plastic is that it takes time and money to recycle, and can add pollution to the air.
I have the perfect solution. Mom and I have this amazing counter top water filter. It has a couple levels of filtration, and an optional ceramic filter in case your water is really dirty. You pour it into the top level, and then in the bottom level there are mineral rocks. I bought a couple cheap water bottles that have a recycle number of seven. They're very hard to recycle, but can be used countless times. There's also a water bottle with the same kind of filter. I saw a handful of dirt thrown into one, and the water came out crystal clear. whee
Here's the filter: http://www.nikken.com/product.cfm?ThemeID=4&GetProductGroup=PiMag⢠Water Technology&GetProductID=16 It's a bit pricey, but it can't be any more than a year's worth of bottled water. Even if it is, I'd say it's well worth it to be able to trust the water you're drinking.

I heard somewhere that plastic actually leaks something carcinogenic into the water after a while. And the water in them doesn't contain fluoride which is good for your teeth, I know dentists and such are against drinking only bottled water.
I guess the stuff is useful for aid work and when water is dirty and not drinkable, and they are useful when you're on the go and get thirsty (better to drink bottled water than to get dehydrated).
But for the majority of the time, tap water should really be drunk. I know where I am (Brisbane) is getting recycled water sometime soon, and even though it's obviously going to be filtered (they wouldn't give it to us to drink if it wasn't safe), it does make you kinda feel squeamish thinking about what the water was before. And old rusty dirty pipes, that makes water rather unclean too, but in both of those situations a filter thingo is really the go.

I just thought bottled water was good for emergency relief and when your going to a place with some bad tap water and you don't have a filter.

eye_of_water my mom sais that bottled water is better because it contains more vitamins and other things that the human body needs, unlike the regular water. i'm sure those plastic bottles are recyleble, right? o_O ~Le Lei~, that's totally awsome xD
Well unless you get vitamin water, it really doesn't have anything in it, except, sometimes it has a VERY small amount of sodium as a preservative. But yes, they can be recycled, but some are too lazy to do so.

Bottled water is important if you're going to Mexico or many other places, and you need water with substances your body is familiar with. Bringing bottled water with you can prevent serious illness.

Plastic bottles are terrible for the environment and for us as well. We use petroleum to produce all (or most) of the plastics that we use in everyday life. These plastics are loaded with PVc's (polyvinyl chloride) and other toxins that pollute everything, even us. Plastic bottles are OK to reuse, but if it gets scratched recycle it. Not to mention that other plastic products (I'm talking to plastic bags) pollute the ocean and other parts of Mother Earth. Not to mention that many plastic products are suspected or known human carcinogens. And to add to our problems, plastics contain hormone disrupters such as bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is an estrogen-like hormone disrupter. BPA studies on animals (always animals?!) have found that BPA leached from the lining of tin cans, dental sealants and polycarbonate bottles can increase body weight of lab animals' offspring. A new study also suggests that even low-level exposure to BPA results in insulin resistance, which can lead to inflammation and heart disease.

It's very nice to see more and more people using aluminum water bottles now. They pulled the mini water bottles from our school lunch program, and though it was meant to lower costs, I'm seeing a lot less trash around campus. smile

I think that bottled water is a bad idea, but its convenient when we're
traveling, but it almost takes a hundred of years to decompose.Recycling
plastic really helps our environment, because tons of plastic go to landfills
everyday and more garbage means more landfills. So if we reduce our usage
of plastic we could really help solve our problems in pollution and besides
some people even make profit in making recycled materials in to art.In our
country someone even made a house by using recycled materials!See,we
have many uses of recycled materials and using them is really good cause
we can help the environment in the same time earn some profit!
