I would recommend against using home products not intended for use around biological material that could be harmful. Shrink wrap products often have microscropic holes in them. Dental dams and the like are common even amongst heterosexuals now (which is what I am) so nobody should give you any odd looks if that's something you're worried about.
I commend people for talking about getting tested - I don't know where you live, or how old you are, but many cities/areas tend to have a certain amount of specific STDs that are more common - you should learn the signs/symptoms of these if you intend to be sexually active. For instance, I haven't heard of many STDs around here, but I know herpes is particularly common in my area.
As for sex - you should always wait if you're not sure because sex is just one of those things that you can't take back, and can really alter a relationship. I was in a 4 year relationship and can more or less point to the first time we had sex as to the point when we both started to become unhappy (we recently broke up).

Wow, I feel like a slut now. I mean, I use condoms with every partner, as well as a shitload of other precautions, like making sure it's latex (if they're allergic it's natural membrane...*shudder*), no rimming, water-based lubes, and careful with the kinks.
It's just that everyone here waited...I didn't and i guess I kinda regret it? I guess I was sexualized at too early an age. Heh, my first date at 14 ended in sex...
I admire you people who wait and get to know your partner.
