"Well hello there, honey!" the enthusiastic woman greeted. Sean and Sophia's mom...Rye wasn't it? Jamie was good with names but he had met her, or her children, very often. In fact, it had only been once or twice at his mother's cafe'. How had he ended dropped off to spend Halloween with them? Well, he guessed that Becca had just grabbed her list of known Cabbage Patch Guardian's and called the first number that drew her eye. He certainly knew at least one or two of the other kids better: Ishi, for example. But, in the end, he was glad to be here at all. Becca, after all, didn't celebrate Halloween. "Do you have a costume?" Rye asked as she shooed him into the room with a smile. He shook his head, feeling a bit foolish. But Mother had refused to buy him one. "No ma'am." "Well that shouldn't be a problem! Sean didn't like his first one...bothered his ears, poor thing, so that means you can be the astronaut instead." She slipped off into another room before he could protest, leaving him standing near the front door by himself. I would have been worse if the hall had been big. But since it was short and narrow it was hard to feel "alone" standing there with the walls reaching out to pat him on the arm or shoulder. But soon he was relieved on any glimpses of awkwardness. A bundle of pastel lace, frills, and glitter came around the corner. He only realized who it was when he saw the long white locks that streamed down from the top. "Hi Sophia," he greeted politely, unsure of what to make of her appearance. It was just too colorful, too sparkly, and too...all over the place. It was too confusing for his eye to follow. But boys were not trained to understand dresses or the things that accompanied them. "Hello," she breathed, smiling a little. She didn't know Jamie very well, but he seemed nice. It would be fun to have someone else along with them on Halloween. She asked, "So, um...you're going to be the astronaut?" He nodded, "I think so." "Neat." There was a slight pause before he asked, distracted by his befuddlement, "What...are you?" A hint of pink touched Sophia's cheeks. She had always felt a little out of place being dressed up, but it was something she was slowly getting used to. Gradually her blushes began to change from embarrassment to pleasure. For now it was a mix of both. She ran a few restless fingers through her hair as she answered, smiling a little, "I'm a fairy."
Jamie didn't know what to make of that, but he smiled anyway. It seemed like the right thing to do. "Oh...you look...nice." "Thanks." Their strange conversation was interrupted as Rye swept in with a pile of shiny gray fabric and a big plastic helmet. Sean followed behind her in something that, to Jamie, looked very similar. He had a sort of space-suit on, though black, with plastic jet pack imitations on his back. He also had a big plastic gun that, as he promptly demonstrating by aiming at Jamie, flashes and made sounds when he fired. "You're dead!" Sean declared, "Cause I'm the best space pirate ever!" He quickly turned his wrath upon his older sister, tongue sticking out between his teeth as he aimed and fired at her. She never seemed to know what to do about it and her distress delighted him to no end.
"Sean, stop, pleeasseee," Sophie begged, slipping a little bit out of his way. This, of course, did not deter him. He simply went after her. It was a never-ending sibling cycle; one ran, another chased. Rye ignored the commotion as she pulled Jamie to the side, "Why don't you take this to the bathroom and see if it fits?" He did as she said, slipping past the yelling wilddog boy and into the bathroom. There the closed the door. It was cramped and pulling off his pants became a trick as he kept bumping into the wall. Eventually he was freed of his normal clothes. Looking at the costume, however, he felt uncertain. It looked awfully small. He supposed that was for good reason; Sean was a short kid and younger too. He took a deep breath and tried his luck. It wasn't as bad as he had thought. Sure the sleeves came up short and the pants were tight, but it wasn't too bad. Getting his hair in the helmet was another matter. When he pushed it one it felt awkward. It wasn't because it was around his face or was too small, but instead because his hair took up a good portion of the empty space leaving him feeling as if he had a dead animal on his head. "Are you done yet?" Bellowed Sean from outside the door, "I want to go get candy already!" Deciding that it wouldn't be that bad, Jamie slipped out of the door. Sean gave him another complimentary shooting. "Are we all ready?" Rye chimed cheerfully, finding nothing amiss in the exchange. Sophia nodded, Jamie offered a "Yes Ma'am", and Sean gave a shout before they all headed out the door.

Sophia had to admit; she found Halloween a bit frightening. All the skeleton and zombie costumes were quite a sight. The fake spider webs hanging on houses and the cackling sound effects people put in their yards made her jump. The costume part was fun and at first she thought she would really enjoy the holiday. But now, walking out on the streets in the dark, she wasn’t so sure. She kept close to the two boys walking with her, somehow thinking that would make her feel better. Sean found nothing unnerving about it all. In fact, he actually seemed delighted. Each time Sophia visibly jumped he laughed and felt a great deal of respect for the grimacing pumpkin or monster that had shocked her so. Once and a while he even jumped at her just to get her to start again. Sometimes his laughter even drowned out the scary music playing from dark windows.
Jamie, however, was rather bemused. The whole thing was fascinating. To think that so many people put so much effort into scaring others! The decorations, the sounds, the pumpkins, and the costumes all amazed him. It was a sight he couldn’t really explain and the puzzle gave more pleasure than the idea of candy did.
Rye stopped them all at the first house they came to. She gestured them forward, “Go on!”
She received a confused look from Jamie, of which she was completely oblivious. Sophia had to pick up on it instead, “We go up to the door and ring the bell. Then we say ‘trick or treat’.”
“Why?” he asked.
“To get candy of course!” Sean grunted as if Jamie were crazy. He then raced forward, cutting through a small, choppy city lawn to get to the door. He didn’t wait for Sophie and Jamie to go along the sidewalk. He rang the door about three times in succession and waited impatiently. Once the door opened even a crack he blurted out, “Trick or treat!”
The woman, though a bit startled, put a few pieces of candy into his pillow case. Sean then darted off without a word, ready to conquer the next house and earn his prize. Sophia and Jamie came up right as he left.
Sophie dropped in a half curtsy, offering the accepted line, “Trick or treat.”
Jamie, having finally seen it for himself, chimed in as well, “Trick or treat.”
“Well aren’t you pretty?” Commented the woman with a smile in Sophie’s direction. Sophie blushed a little, but was smiling. She offered a thank you and headed back down the sidewalk.
Jamie waited a moment before following. He felt the need to look in his pillow case, one borrowed from Sean, to see what he had been given. It looked like mini bag of m&ms and a pixie stick. Hmmmm…
“Come ON!” shouted Sean. He’d already been to two more houses and Rye had forced him to wait for Jamie and his sister to catch up. “Sorry!” He called back and hurried forward.
After about an hour or so, when Sean began to complain loudly about his feet hurting, they headed back home. There Rye had all three children spread out across the floor. She moved the coffee table out of the way so they’d have more room.
“Why don’t you see what you’ve got? Just don’t eat anything without a wrapper!” That was about the extent of Rye’s candy-checking skills.
Sean was the first to do so, not hesitating even for a moment. Apparently his aching feet were forgotten, for he barely took a glance at what he had received before he started eating. He threw the ones he didn’t like at Sophia, aiming each time specifically for her face in hopes of hitting her.
Sophia, on the other hand, settled hers out neatly. She began to organize them into piles. She put all the lollipops in one, all the snickers in another, etc. She didn’t eat any until everything was where it belonged. Then she took a nibble at one of her favorites.
“What’s this…?” Jamie asked Sophia. He had begun to look through his, as opposed to sorting, and found there were many brands of candy he had never heard or seen before. The one he held presently was called Bottle Caps.
“Oh…they’re like…sugar candies, I guess. Kinda like sweet-tarts, but they aren’t tarty. They have some nice flavors…like root beer,” Sophia explained.
“They suck!” Sean said, throwing a package at Sophie as if to demonstrate his point. He went back to chomping on a tootsie-roll pop.
Jamie took his pack and slid it open. He then popped one of the brown colored ones into its mouth. It was…odd tasting. It wasn’t bad, but he couldn’t really name the flavor. Hmmm…this certainly had been more of a learning experience than he had expected. Before the night was over he had learned at least 20 new types of candy, along with the kind of snacks that a kid doesn’t want to see in their candy bags; crackers, pretzels, and apples. But eventually his mother came to get him before it got too late.
“Thanks for coming,” Sophia told him as he helped him take his candy to the door.
“I had a fun,” he said with a smile. He liked how it made her glow a bit.
“Come back any time,” Rye insisted as he left. She then went to fetch a trash can for all the wrappers.

Jamie shivered under his covers. He could feel the goose bumps rising on his skin and the sheets felt like they were trapping him in the cold as opposed to warming him. He curled closer, as if condensing and lying still would make it better. It didn’t work, of course. So with a shudder he sat up and shook his head to wake himself. Then he stared blearily at the clock across the room. 1:30am.
There was no way he’d be able to go back asleep with it being this cold. So he could up, shaking even more as the cool air hit his skis. So the blanket had been insulating him a little. He shuffled his feet along the floor as he went into the hall. The frigid wood floor-boards burned his feet, but he kept going until he felt the knob of the closet. The light of the hall was poor, due to the hour, but he did get a sliver of light from the door just down the stairs.
Before he could open the linen closet, however, he heard a very light clattering sound below. It wasn’t very loud, in fact in resembled those squeaks you might hear from the wind or the dull clatter of the air conditioning. He knew somehow, though, that this wasn’t one of those noises. So he turned his head to look over his shoulder. His breath held a little and he looked at the bottom of the stairs.
Coming in the over-sized doggy door was a huge…dog. Well, no, that wasn’t right. It didn’t really look like any dog he’d ever seen. The way its limbs looked and how it walked was different. He didn’t know much about animals, really, but when it came to form and function these were things he noticed. He did, after all, build things. The color he couldn’t place, as he wasn’t good with colors either, but it did seem vaguely familiar. He supposed he should have been frightened and for a brief moment he was. Then, after his heart jumped like a startled bird it settled again. It was walking slowly, sniffing a little, its body relaxed. It was comfortable here.
He hadn’t been staring long when it looked up at him. The eyes were sharp and blue and invasive, as if they knew him. Before he could swallow the air in his throat it turned and left back into the night.
He waited for a long time to see if it returned. It didn’t. So eventually, when his feet turned blue, he mechanically took out a blanket and returned to his room. He found that he couldn’t sleep, his mind still frozen in the gaze of the strange beast.
