Callista paled. "You did..." She stepped further away from him, her cheeks regaining her color and growing red with anger. "You did! I can't believe you did! Why would you do something like that?"

"And how were you going to protect me if she killed you?" Callista's body began to shake, partly because she was upset, but mostly because he had scared her and she was trying to keep from crying. "Doesn't it make more sense to live so that you can keep protecting me?"
