Although I will probably never switch, I was wondering what the ups and downs of having/playing a piccolo as opposed to a flute are. You know, pure curiosity.

they're essentially two different instruments, so you'd be best to practice both regularly, to keep your embochure in top condition.
And I've read of people who lose some response in their lower register on flute if they only play picc for awhile.

If you're in a small-ish room playing Piccolo it will slowly damage your ear drum and your hearing if you don't wear ear plugs.

Mori Kesumi I like your sig...I used to play Bass flute! You don't have a contra bass flute though! I want a contrabass flute so bad! But they're expensive like crazy... and I'd probably pass out trying to play it. XD

i play clarinet but at the end of last school year our BD had us try a new instrument for like three days- and i tried flute! it was cool! if i were to learn another instrument it would prolly be that.

Just remember: Flutes get the hard parts. Clarinets get almost as hard, but flutes go the extra measure.

yeah, flute gets the top of the chord most, so you really have to be confident ^ ^

Ick, that's one of the bad things. Usually the flutes aren't the strongest section and they still get the high parts no matter how awful and out of tune they may sound. Hence the reason I need to drill my section next year until they can play better than all the other sections.
